This project started over a year ago when Lamenter (masteroftheforge.com) agreed to build a custom Mephiston for me. The build itself took some time but what took longer was me plucking up the courage to start on such a fantastic model. Once I did of course things flowed more quickly and here he is just in time for the new codex: Mephiston, Lord of Death...

That's awesome!

The only criticism I have is the underside of his "jacket." Personally, I would have painted it a different color to break up all the red on the model and add a little more visual interest. However, this is still a wonderfully painting model. Great job!

Thanks for the comments!

@ ScootyP, I hadn't thought of that but think you are right. I wouldn't want to introduce a new colour – I kept the palette deliberately limited to match the most recent artwork for Mephiston, basically the core Blood Angels colours of red, black and gold – with the blue accent for the power weapons. Black could work nicely for the inside of the cloak though... it would add something to the back view where you see it folded up at the corner...

i disagree.. i think the red on red looks great. the blue glow from the weapons provides more than enough contrast for the model i think.

Your painting as always mate is amazing, however I would have gone with a different colour for his coat. As always though it's beautiful!

You could always apply a red glaze to the armour to give it a slight sheen & change its hue slightly...
But the modelling is superb. Did you do a stage-by-stage photo diary of the build?

Best one I have seen. Maybe one more color just to brake up the red.

Just forgot what I was going to say.

Thanks for the comments!

The inspiration for the paint job was artwork such as:

I wanted to recreate that limited colour palette as much as possible. I think ScootyP made a good call with the inside of the cloak but I wouldn't go as far as making the cloak a completely different colour from the armour.

I did actually add a red glaze to the armour but very thin. I might go back and give it another couple of coats, maybe some more highlights too.
The model was sculpted by Lamenter over at masteroftheforge.com. I don't think he took many WIP pics but...

Why miliput and GS instead of one or the other?

This is a very interesting conversion.

You'd have to ask Lamenter

Based on my own limited experience they are quite different to work with though - they each have unique properties.

Chief Librarian No-Peripheral-Vision looks awesome. I like how you've kept the general outline of his current model (which desperately needs replacement), giving him a visual cue to your opponent as to who he is.

Hope you don't mind LutherMax:

GS, when set, is more flexible, doesn't hold edges as well but, IMO, easier to work with. It's easy to keep fresh - just bung it in the freezer.
Milliput, when set, is very hard, holds great edges, can be filed even drilled & can be a real bugger to work with. It's esp painful when the Milliput is old. One of halves (don't remember which one) develops little flakes & becomes very stiff making very hard to mix let alone mix thoroughly. I don't know if freezing it would keep it fresh longer.
You can also mix both together. I did it once & it seemed to adopt the best properties of both.
There is also Brown Stuff which sets harder then the green but harder to find.
Another product which is quite popular in Pro-Create putty.

He looks brilliant, but I will echo the sentiment that the monochromatic color scheme really does the model a disservice. I would have thrown in some yellow patterns or different-colored iconography on the cape or skirt just to break it up a bit. Right now it's just a massive blob of red and it makes the model, painted, look unfinished.

Still, you've done a wonderful job.

Well, you can do that with greenstuff as well.

I also don't get why, say, parts of the robe are milliput, while other parts of the same robes are greenstuff. It's just folds in fabric in both cases.

Anyways, back on topic a bit, I do agree that it might be a bit better if the robe and armor weren't the exact same color.

Luther...Holy of Pearl! That's an awesome model!!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I think the layering is brilliant! Great depth and character! I wouldn't change a thing.

Luther presented the model to us as Mephiston period. I fully believe when not presented with the typical "here's newly painted model, what do you think?" that perhaps opinions as to how you would do the model is something better left unsaid.

It's a well done model Luther, and sculptor! One of a kind.

Thanks Kelly, and thanks all for the comments!

Criticism is always noted and appreciated. Almost every time I paint something, feel it's 'done', take pics and post them someone points out a potential improvement and I think, "huh, damnit you're right!"

In this case I agree with ScootyP that the underside of the cloak could have been a different colour to add something particularly to the back view. I think I will go back and change that. I will also highlight and glaze the armour a bit more to differentiate it from the cloak - but I do want only a subtle difference as I want to stay true to the reference artwork I posted above.

Personally I'm happy with the paint job but opinions are always welcome!

More Death Company and another Baal Pred (all FW models) coming up next...
