Very good: Stormsword (giant ignore-cover blast), Shadowsword (best tank killer).

Acceptable: Hellhammer (decent at most roles, but not great at any of them), Stormblade (best MEQ killer in Apocalypse, but on normal tables the range advantage over the Stormsword is mostly wasted), Stormlord (mobile bunker, but much less useful now that fortifications exist).

Bad: all the other ones.

Whatever you choose, magnetize the kit, so you can build any of them.

The Shadowsword is decent but is it really 'very good'?

It's still just one D hit, even if the blast is nice. For about 200 points more, you can get a Warhound that shells out four D blasts.

And for $400 more, too.

Yep. For 500 points you pretty much solve your anti-heavy-tank needs, allowing you to focus the rest of your list on killing other unit types. And you do it from across the table, without the need to deliver squishy melta units to within 6" of each target.

For about 200 points more, you can get a Warhound that shells out four D blasts.

Sure, but that's because the turbolaser Warhound is in its special "don't bring this if you like to have friends" category. The fact that the Warhound is one of GW's worst balance mistakes doesn't stop the Shadowsword from being a good unit.

In a non-Apoc game, I think the Stormsword is the best, if I don't get it wrong, its main gun is S10, Ap1, 10 inch-blast, ignore cover. But it is only 36" range.

Ask yourself: Do you want a big flashy blast, or do you want a S6 AP3 machine gun that shoots 15 times, with the option to fire a further 15 times at a second target if you stay still?

I want 30 shots and then i want to put and i wish pask in it and make it so OP it hurts. Just like with the deathstrike missile i cant be trusted for it to go scattering off into the middle of nowhere and do bugger all.

S10 AP1 7" blast that ignores cover. Ignores cover is the best special rule in the entire of 40k. There's a reason it was the only baneblade variant banned in the lvo tournament.

Why stop at 7"? The Stormsword has a 10" blast with the same stats, just without the turret (which doesn't matter anymore now that superheavies can't be immobilized).

There's a reason it was the only baneblade variant banned in the lvo tournament.

And that reason is the LVO rules are written by marine fanboys who can't stand the thought of their marines dying without saves. So any LoW that can kill marines without a save was banned, regardless of how powerful it is.

Ah yeah, stormsword is bigger template and still ignores cover. Go for that one.

It's not just marines though, At S 10 it also blows up waveserpents (those that have fired their shields anyway) instant deaths nurgle princes, white scars deathstars, jugger spawn lords, broadsides etc etc

Its ignores cover that makes it so much better than the regular variants. GW doesn't seem to have any idea how to balance cover. The legacy of keylek(?) that gives ignores cover to all blast weapons and the stupidity of 3+ jinking (skilled rider / holofields etc) is testament to that (its not even like the points cost of these upgrades/units is even balanced for it).
