I received the Betrayal At House On The Hill board game for Christmas, the game seems like a lot of fun but the miniatures are very basic.

Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative "horror investigator" type miniatures that I could use in game?

Check out Sandy Peterson's Cthulhu Wars. It might have what you're looking for in there. It's primarily the monsters, but there might have been some investigators floating around somewhere.

If that doesn't do the trick, check out ReaperMinis for sure. They've got models that scratch every itch. If you're lucky, it's in Bones material and super cheap. If you aren't as lucky, it'll be in metal and a touch more expensive (but still pennies on the dollar to GW prices).

Hopefully one of those will do the trick for ya. Great game, by the way. Had lots of fun with it at a friend's house.

Thanks for the info, Cthulu wars looks like a cool game but it doesn't have the mini's that I'm after; at least not that I could see at first look.

I forgot about Reaper, as usual with them the quality of sculpts can vary quite a bit. The figure finder app thingy is quite useful, I might pick up a couple of the detective figures.

Unfortunately, the only 'investigator' figure for Cthulhu Wars was the Kickstarter exclusive H.P. Lovecraft model.

The other minis have quite an "old school" vibe, but some of them look like they would be fun to paint.

Some are rare and collectible, others are not and they often appear on eBay under vague listings as people don't know them. Keep an eye open at wargame shows and other loose miniatures.

I think you will like some offering from Lead Adventure in the Heroes and Villains section including Philipp von Kraft, Ervin Hwardovski, Dr. Lehmann, and Sebastian Ritter.

You should also browse through the Pulp Figures catalog. In particular the gumshoes from the Gangland Justice collection might be useful.

Take a look at the Pulp Alley store. There are only a few miniatures, but they are along the lines of what you are looking for.

Copplestone Castings has several potentially fruitful collections, including Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Back of Beyond, and Gangsters.

I looked at some of the Reaper figures earlier, a couple of them would indeed be suitable.

I haven't seen the Mutton Chop mini's before, I will have to buy the Sheer Luck Basil and Bruce figures, they have tons of character!

I should have thought of Hasslefree earlier, I have only bought fantasy figures from them before.

The Lillie Poots Pulp Alley figure is almost perfect, except for one thing; the prototype version that Andrew Rae sculpted before he changed the design was much better! If I can't have that version I am loathe to pick up the, IMHO, inferior version.

Bob Murch's pulp figures are so enjoyable to paint. They have nice deep detail and a very suitable aesthetic for the period. I'd highly recommend them.
