Pardon me for my noob-ness, but how do I identify whether the Chaos Space Marines Codex book I bought is a 7th edition and not a 6th? I bought my copy off of Amazon so I'm not 100% sure if it's the latest by looking at it. As far as I can tell, there are no markings to designate what edition it is. The only thing I see is a 2012 copyright on the inside cover. Can someone help me out by pointing me to some tell-tale signs that I have the 7th. Just trying to get started in the 40k world but I want to make sure I have the latest CSM codex. Thanks in advance.

if it's hard cover it's the most up to date one. CSMs don't have, and likely won't get a 7th ed specific dex, but will contiune to use the 6th ed one. so, so long as your using a hard cover codex you're good

As BrianDavion said, the 6th edition one is the most up to date one, but I'm presuming we're getting a new one some time in maybe later 2015, give or take.

So, what's touted as the 7th edition CSM codex isn't really a full revamp, but is instead the 6th with some editing corrections? I'm seeing release dates of the 7th edition of May 31, 2014 when I google the subject, but you're saying it's not a proper, full-on codex release? Undoubtedly, I defer to what you guys are telling me as I am the noob here.

And BTW, I do have the hardcover version, so it sounds like I have the latest after all.

No, it is "a proper, full-on codex release," but there hasn't been an update since the one released right after 6th edition was released. Most of the codicies miss an edition or two before getting another update. Other than the FAQ and some DLC, there have been no updates for the CSM codex. I don't think that GW has even bothered with a corrected edition....

I think someone said the rules about Noise Marines and Blastmasters were updated at some point, but that's it. Many of the FAQ rules form 6th edition did not make it over to 7th.

Incidentally, I think the only reason they allow you to take Blastmasters for every 5 models is to sell more upgrade packs.

Indeed, if it's been labeled as 7th edition thats proably just the seller labeling it that so buyers understand it's the codex for the most current edition. despite that Chaz says I'd also not hold my breath for a new chaos codex, if anything I'd expect to see a Levbithan style "second wave" for chaos

I hear that the new CSM codex is just going to be a combining of the CD and CSM codexs, but hopefully they will also change some rules and maybe give chapter tactics or something similar.

The current rumor is that cult troops are being pulled from the Codex in favor of supplements that will also give us cult terminators and cult chosen. It's really disappointing.

I would be shocked if the next CSM Codex had anything added or any significant rules improvements. GW has a financial incentive for keeping CSMs broken. If you think about it, players need some combination of the following items to make CSMs work (prices estimated from memory):

- Codex CSM: $50
- Supplement: Crimson Slaughter: $30 (to get divination and working possessed)
- Supplement: Black Legion: $30 (to get chosen as troops without Abaddon and those artefacts)
- Dataslate: Be'Lakor: $10 (to get Be'Lakor)
- Dataslate: Cypher: $10 (to get Cypher and Fallen)
- Dataslate: Helbrutes: $10 (to get Murderpacks)
- Imperial Armor 13: $85 (to get Fire Raptors, Sicarans and Rapiers)

That's over $200 for a complete set of rules. I don't see them wanting that price point to drop, even if people are not buying everything out there they are buying.

But imagine if the CSM ruleset products looked more like this:

- Codex: CSM: $50 (including Be'Lakor, Cypher, and all HQs)
- Codex: Your Favorite Legion $50 (with special rules, FOC changes, units and artefacts for each)
- Supplement: Some Unit: $10 (Including formations w/ special rules)

Not saying anything like this could ever happen, but think about it for a minute. The problem with CSMs is not even the rules anymore, it's that the rules are so fragmented people don't always understand what actually exists.

I stopped into a GW store before Christmas and told the manager I wanted to start a CSM army. I pretended not to know anything about CSMs and asked him what I need. His response was interesting.

- He said the CSM Codex and the printed supplements are all the rules that exist for CSMs.
- He said the battleforce was overpriced and tried to sell me on 2 packs of CSM boxed sets and 4 packs of cultists with Rhinos for each.
- He said no one uses Predators or Land Raiders anymore and tried to sell me on 3 boxes of fiends.
- He said Heldrakes are the only flyers available for CSM armies and most people use them with autocannons.
- He said the Lord of Skulls is a must have for any CSM army and I needed to get one.
- He said supplements are things you download from the Internet to enhance a force, and to buy the army first.

When you can't go into a GW store and get the straight story about the product line, something is terribly wrong.

the current rumor is complete bunk. most likely someone heard they where working on a cult troops codex and assumed they're pulling em from codex: space marines. which is no more likely to be true then stormtroopers where pulled from guard or legion where pulled from spacemarines
