So I was rel listening to the Butcher's Nails Audio Drama. It mentioned the ursas claws on the conquerer. Harpoons for spearing ships. It got me thinking. They are attached to chains right? What would there effective range be? What percentage of the ship would be required for storing them?

Impossible to say. It would depend on what sort of propulsion is applied to the spear, and how much drag it suffers from whatever spooling mechanism feeds the chain out.

What percentage of the ship would be required for storing them?

Probably quite a bit. But again, that would depend on the diameter and length of the chain.

I imagine they must be some pretty serious chains to pull the ships. I doubt they have fancy technology as the imperium is about as advanced as we are today. Plus they don't really do anything on a small scale. I would have to imagine its a pretty serious propulsion system as well. Void combat will take place over incredible distances. In order to be used effectively, the claws would have to be able to clear those distances in a relatively short time. Especially when they are being used effectively like they were on elder ships which can stop start andand change direction whenever they please.

I have heard Butcher's Nails as well. Good one.

And in relation to Ursus Claws, I think it is more of a statement than a weapon.

"if you come close we will rip you apart with these, and if we catch you we will also rip you apart with these..."

Storage: Conqueror is rather big, and they had 8 of Ursus Claws and they formed part of the hull when not deployed.

Another theory: maybe these claws were there to hold the ship so Eaters of the Worlds could board/teleport to enemy ship easier. We know that Angrons boys love to solve all disagreements face to face. And, similar thing happened at the end of this audio drama as far as I remember...

Cheers

Keep in mind Gloriana class ships are the biggest ships in the whole 40k Universe.

they're CONSIDERABLY more advanced. especially when you remember this was 30K, a lotta tech that was lost still existed then.

it might not look like much but the humble lasgun is an AMAZING peice of technology that modern militaries would Kill for

Ursus Claws are one of the dumbest concepts I've ever heard of, which is saying something considering how OTT 40K is.

40K ships supposedly fight at distances where even "point-blank range" is easily thousands of kilometers apart. The idea of shooting a barbed chain at a ship and "reeling it in" is moronic. Moronic for 40K? Probably not, but certainly one of the many things you kind of have to just scratch your head at and ignore for the sake of the narrative.

Yeah definitely. The Imperium in 40k is quite advanced, and they were even more so in 30k.

I love the Ursus Claws. Do they make sense? No. Would they work, or be worth it? No. Are they stupidly awesome? Yes.

It was perfectly in fitting with his legion.
Come close and our flagship has melee weapons.

That was definitely one of those "rule of cool" things, because the logistics of it doesn't really make much sense.

I can't imagine the weight and storage space of giant space grappling hooks being more effectively used than the other, more simple forms of weaponry and boarding gear the ship already has.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Ursas Claws" is Bear Claws. Though Bear is technicaly Ursus it sounds similar enough..

The book explains how much they cost in resources and it's considerable, they also use them at very short range so it's not fireing them at thousands of k, it's fireing them at near point blank in real terms so I would imagine a few kliks, they are used to pin an enemy and stop it from escaping.

Also the gloriana class is the second biggest imperial ship class, the biggest are the king ships used by the word bearers, furious abyss and the 2 others.
