If you edit your wargaming photos what software program do you use?
Bonus points for an intuitive free one.
I use Picassa for very basic editing effects but am looking to do more complicated, interesting things.

GIMP is probably the most popular image manipulation freeware. Keep in mind, like any image manipulation software, it can only do so much and they are no replacement for a poorly shot photo. The most important part is taking quality pictures, something that can be accomplished with a simple point-and-shoot digital camera and a photo tent/light box.

If you have a DSLR camera, make sure to use the manual setting, use the RAW format for the picture, set the ISO to 100, set the f-stop to at least f/10 (that is a good baseline to start with), manually set the white-balance, and play with exposure times until the photo turns out the way you want. Also, always use a tripod and use a remote to activate your shutter if possible to keep from touching the camera.

Thanks.
I was looking specifically for effects like forge world do with their IA series of pics, add lense flares, grid overlays, smokey type effects, different color pallets etc.

You can do those things with Gimp, just google for a tutorial of what you want to do and you'll find it.

Forgeworld uses Photoshop, I can pretty much guarantee that. I use it too, but don't dress up my photos like that.

One more vote for GIMP. It's way more powerful than I'll likely ever need, but not so complicated that basic tasks take any real training. Nine times out of ten, I don't do anything beyond a crop and color balance tweak - I'm far from experienced and it barely takes longer to do the work than it does to load up the program. Can't beat the price, either, and there's a massive community for tutorials, plug-ins, custom brushes, etc.

I just drink enough alcohol so that they start to look good. Primarily gin, but sometimes rum. Beer-goggles, not just for use in bars!

and no love for MS paint?

(in the past I’ve used Photoshop, but that was when I was working at a college and could get it for free as part of my job)

Gimp is great and as others have said quite powerful... and free. :-)

I love GIMP, but I'm so used to Photoshop (I think it was 5.0? 1998) at this point the shortcuts are etched into my soul.

Pretty sure you can customize the shortcuts in GIMP, melkor.
