Subject: Battlefleet Gothic in an age without models?
Since BFG is now unsupported there are a lot of folks out there that produce excellent 'proxy' ships. Finding them on ebay is expensive and they are not always in the best shape when you get them. There are some great mentions on this thread, Battlegroup Helios, Shapeway, etc... The ships for all sorts of races are out there---just got to do some poking around. I always found it fun to scratch build a ship. Using spare parts and balsa wood and you can make some awesome BFG stuff!!!

Somehow most of my cruisers ended up with broken stems. I also bought a battleship whose stem simply broke under weight of the metal miniature O_o .
Another thing is that miniatures are completely out of scale which is 1:100million which makes them take way too much place.
So, for a long time I play with counters. The counters also have fire/turn arcs on them.Used to put ship info on them but decided that it's impractical.

I recommend these for your stands. Use them on all of my BFG ships. I've replaced my plastic rods with brass rods and then attached these connectors. They help with transport and, handily, the teeth are set so that a quick twist equals a 45 degree turn! You can use the angled adapters along with some smoke effects to represent hulks as well

They don't help with the model size, though. Also, in rules model bases can actually overlap which is better represented with counters.
Interestingly, the starship 'models' for FFG's Forbidden Stars look annoyingly awesome. Now if only we can pesuade them to do something other than just a risk-esque game with them.

Those Forbidden Stars models are awesome. I don't give hoot about the game play, I'm buying a box just for the BFG and Objective marker potential alone.
From the game play images I've seen, it looks like you get 4 small fleets for $99.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios
You would need to put them on the proper flying bases, but otherwise they'd work just fine. A little stubby for my tastes though.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
Yeah, you would have to rebase them for BFG, but for the price they beat anything else still in production.
I'll also take those plastic space marine ships over the metal ones anyday. The Ork Kruiser is a fresh new sculpt, adding needed variety to Ork fleets. The Eldar ships look fine. I do have to admit that the Chaos fleet looks a little compacted compared to the original sculpts.
If you look at the Forbidden Stars cards which are 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" (63.5 x 88 MM (this was confirmed at the FFG forums) and compare them to the models it would seem that the escorts would be around 3-4 cm and cruisers around 5-6 cm. So the escorts should be quite right scale and the cruisers would make great light cruisers if mixing them with original models feels hard. The Space Marine Battle-Barges and Strike Cruisers look to be a little bigger than other ships so probably fit well as they are.
I'm planning on using the Battle-Barges as Cruiser sized Barges with the help of Smotherman Formula (fits well with the Astartes mixed fleet fluff) and Strike Cruiser either as they are or as Heavy Frigates (2 HP) again using Smotherman Formula. Oh the joy
Also the Forbidden Stars looks to be great game (the rules are already available from the FFG site) so there's really nothing to lose - pre-ordered mine months ago
PS: Sorry about all this hype, I'm just really excited about the game and all the possibilities it has!

Maybe so, but does matter if your ships look smaller than the rest of your fleet or your opponents fleets. Not so much from a gaming perspective, but more from an aesthetic point of view. Which is something that should matter most I think, otherwise you might as well play with random chips/coins/pieces of paper.

Aesthetically they have the same look and style of the classic BFG ships, which is more important than if they are a little bit smaller than the OOP models, that new players likely won't have in their fleets.
If you feel a ship being a few mm shorter than the original is the same as playing with random chips/coins/pieces of paper, you're either being disingenuous or suffer from massive OCD.
I don't know the scale of the game pieces...but I was under the impression that they were close enough in scale to be played as smaller class ships, i.e., strike cruisers or frigates...etc...

So, received my Forbidden Stars boardgame today and it's looking pretty great For me the escorts are 100% compatible and cruiser sized ships are pretty good light cruisers or at least heavy escorts. But don't take just from me - here are some comparison pics so you can decide for yourself

You're welcome Forbidden Stars is a great game and the miniatures are very usable in BFG and also in Epic - Titans as Knight and Stompa sized walkers, tanks as they are, Bastions and Forges as Imperial terrain and Infantry Stands (the flagpoles) as Objective Markers. For 110€ (which is quite expensive for a boardgame) I didn't get just a great game but a pile of miniatures that would cost me hundreds of €'s if bought from Ebay etc. I give 10/10 to FFG for this one
Edit: Btw, if you need more pictures or better measurements from the models let me know and I'll try to help when I have time

Yeah, for example the Space Marine strike cruiser from the game is very good as a Gladius class escort or could be also used as Nova (it has the Bombardment cannon which looks quite like a Lance) or one could even design a new escort class which has 1 or 2 point Bombardment cannon and few points of Weapon Batteries etc. The Battle Barge is only few mm shorter than GW's Strike Cruiser and somewhat broader so fits perfectly for that role and again one could always design even a new class for it - yeah, I really like the Smotherman Formula
Of course building whole fleet(s) from the game is going to cost (you'd need 2 or 3) but as additions to an existing fleet or beginnings of small raider fleets it is a great investment - and you also get a great boardgame as well.
But now I stop before somebody thinks I've been hired to promote the game

Space Marines: 3 Battle-Barges ( miniature is GW's strike cruiser sized) and 3 Strike Cruisers ( miniature is GW's escort sized)
Chaos: 3 Grand Cruisers ( miniature is between GW's light cruisers and largest escorts in size) and 3 Iconoclast escorts ( miniature is GW's escort sized)
Eldar: 3 Battleships (the miniature is between GW's light cruisers and largest escorts in size) and 6 (yes, 6) Hellebore escorts (miniature is GW's Hemlock escort sized )
Orks: 3 Kill Kroozers (miniature between GW's light cruisers and largest escorts in size) and 3 Onslaught escorts (about same as GW's Onslaught in size)
Hope this helps!
