Subject: Is it ever worth it to take just one Flyrant?

I have one Flyrant 2x Devourers. Just about every game I've played she's been focus-fired down early in the game (4 wounds go away very quickly)
Does the whole Dakka Flyrant thing ever work with just one of them?
Also, if you already have one Dakka Flyrant, do you have a preferred alternate loadout for a second Flyrant ? I was thinking 1 x Devoured and 1x Heavy Venom Cannon to add a high Strength weapon to the mix.

P.S. I'm usually playing in 2k or more games.

HVC is really wasted on a flying Tyrant. There is no substitute for the quad-Devouers, though there is a definite niche of the "templant" using a Thorax Swarm and the Miasma Cannon (even better if you're running a Hypertoxic Node to give the Miasma Cannon instant death on a 6+ to wound).
If you find that your lone flying Tyrat is getting killed a lot then you need to a) be more cautious with it, b) deploy other fliers or fast units to support it or c) upgrade it to a Fighter Ace for a chance at being an escape artist or having an extra wound (options a) and b) are more reliable).

Yeah, so far I only have a Flyrant and a Crone table-ready flyers-wise. Hopefully when I get my other Flyrant and Crone assembled and painted I'll get multiple air targets and some redundancy going on.
Could you explain why you feel a HVC is a waste on a Flyrant? (Relatively new to both Tyranids and FMCs here)

Useless if jinking, low damage output, extremely expensive, high strength paired with AP4, making it bad against MEQs AND vehicles.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Understood. Makes sense. Looks like two flying mantises is where I'm headed.

If you have just one I second going for Flier Ace to increase survivability (hopefully). I assume you have Malanthropes/Venomthropes supporting? They do help as well if not.
Two is definitely better though - I started playing recently and you are right, one is a big target whilst two are much harder to down for many armies. I'm personally aiming for 3 - enough to run Leviathan, or 2+Skyblight, mostly as I don't fancy going quite as heavy spam as the 5 flyrant list going around as our "most competitive build" right now.
Regarding builds, 2x TL Devs is absolutely the best one (+Electroshock Grubs too), they're quite probably the best weapon in our codex imo. A single Str 9 Blast that has high chance to miss completely against an average 9 Str 6 hits? Law of averages wins out here. I would never run a HVC on a flyrant - and the only time I'd take stuff other than 2x TL Devs is in a formation: Miasma Cannon and Barbed Strangler possibly for huge anti-infantry possibly in Hypertoxic (which by itself is not that great), and some LWBS build in the Skytyrant formation.

Playing at 1250 I bring two Dakkafex and a Walking Hive Tyrant with Heavy Venom Cannon and guards as my Warlord, that way killing my Flyrant isn't my opponent's mission priority. I haven't seen her fall in a long time.
Point is that if you have other really big and dangerous targets they can squeeze by killing what they need to. Otherwise, yeah, two is the way to go.

Last game I brought a Mawloc, Trygon Prime, Tervigon, Harpy, and the Queen, thinking I'd have a bunch of target priorities (I'm playing with what I have painted now actually, just hit 2k).
Well, the Trygon didn't show up til Round 4, and the Mawloc rolled a 1 on the Mishap chart. The Tervigon is ignored, and oddly enough the Harpy was Target Priority 1, and was brought down in Round 1. The Queen lasted witht 1 wound to Round 3. Then she wrecked an Imperial Knight and went down with the explosion! (The only way I could get a shot off on the Knights last Hull point was bringing her to within 3" of the IK due to mandatory 12" rule, and clever positioning).
By he way, Trygon Primes seem like a big expensive bunch of nothing to me. Am I missing something? I could see they might be cool with the Endless Swarm, but Wtf?

You average 11 hits with a Flyrant. 9 is what a Carnifex averages.
