So some of you may be familiar with the film and TV show, Catfish that looks at people meeting "the love of their lives" for the first time and revealing them to be frauds.
Has anyone here had that sorta experience for real?

It's a fish that's basically a bottom feeder. Eats dead material in the water. Y'know- creepy lol.

I was 13 and on Face Book, my name is kinda feminine for a male. Since I had no photo yet heaps of people friended me (as are the joys of being a "girl" online, instant popularity). One day I put a picture up of me and people all of a sudden messaged me in disgust thinking I was a lesbian who liked all these guy things. I deleted my account after that. Was pretty funny though. Closest thing to a catfish. People expected me as a hot chick who liked guy things but ended up being a 13 year old kid.

I'd been under the assumption that the "catfishing" referred to the MTV show hosts digging through the layers of muck to find the truth (ie food) like how catfish feed.

I think that the hosts that do the investigating are considered to be the catfish as they troll through the muck of the internet. Hard to say, teenagers often adopt slang terms that make no friggin sense. I'm familiar with the terms of "being played" or "gamed" when somebody is being tricked in a relationship, when it comes to the current crop of teems who knows? The TV show never really explains the term outside of saying they investigate. When I first heard of it I thought it referred to some sort of Noodling type of redneck hand fishing. I find Cheaters endlessly more entertaining, rather than watching two nerdy guys in skinny jeans you get to see all sorts of Jerry Springer style trailer trash fights and the host even got stabbed. It's pure win.

It started with a documentary called "Catfish" then went on to become a MTV "reality" show. In modern parlance it has to do with someone pretending to be something online that they are not.
I haven't run into it that much really, but I also tend to take everything online with a grain of salt. There was an acquittance on FFXI that pretended to be a girl for years until admitting they were a guy, but I never gave them anything or cared that much either way so it didn't have much of an effect on me.

I've known plenty of guys who played online RPGs that pretended to be female to get in game items from other players. And the scary thing is that it worked really well.

Well, most people I have met on online dating sites seem way too interested in seeing me without clothes on. I suspect those sites are filled more with creepy men than with interesting people.
It sometimes reminds me of that Southpark episode about chatroulette.

My mother in law has my wife's facebook sign-in info, and she sometimes goes online and friends people, sends them messages, etc. while pretending to be my wife. It's really weird. I've told my wife she should just change her password, but she feels bad for her mom as trolling facebook is one of her major hobbies. I don't understand why she doesn't just get her own account, but she's thrown a fit each time it is suggested. The whole situation bespeaks mental illness, which I think is the root cause of most of these catfishing scenarios.

On another forum there was a longtime member that posted pics of a fairly attractive girl as being them. She perported to be a lesion and posted pics of her and her girlfriend. She new a great amount about tactics and didn't just post silly things.
Last year someone signed onto the site and posted that she was the real person this member was saying she was. She posted pictures holding a sign we had asked her to right something on to prove it was her.
she said it was a girl she knew doing it and that she had posted on several forums of various interests, including an SnM site. Lol
After she proved who she was the imposter disappeared and removed all of her information.
It was very creepy since she was a longtime member so we'd taken for granted that she was who she was.

I've never run into it fortunately/unfortunately. The people who do it are fethed up though. There's an episode of the MTV show where a guy thinks he's talking to a slim, blonde haired, blue eyes white girl and it turns out to be a bespectacled, fat, gay, black man. It's worth a watch for the laughs.

Well, I'm completely insane.
Now, am I delusional in thinking I'm insane? Am I actually insane and posting this for gaks and giggles? Or am I making all of this up to study your reactions?
You'll never know! Mwahahaha!
EDIT: Unless it's Facebook, in which case I know everyone on my friends list, I don't take people on the internet too seriously when they talk about themselves. As in the example Slavetodorkness gave, it's quite scary the lengths some people will go to.

Well, at least those using mics A lot of them used party text instead. So that was one dead give away, some others were the way too obvious name, the dressing overly suggestively (one actual female friend said it always looked like a drag queen dressed them), and being overly flirty
