It's almost as much of a tradition to point it out TBH.

I've got a life to live outside this place. I'm not going to hunt up and include citations for things that are common knowledge for most people. I don't think any of the things I said are beyond belief and thus it is not up to me to prove them but for you to disprove them if you disagree.

Yeah, I think we're done here.

... it is entirely disingenuous to think that Americans are happy with our criminal justice system. We know it's broken. It is, to an incredibly significant degree, a privately-run, for-profit industry. This is a problem, because "repeat business" is what the system is all about.
And, more on-topic:
The case around Polanski is... very weird. If it were anyone else, he'd have grounds for a retrial, because the behavior of several people (including the judge and the prosecution) is... not entirely legit. There's a bunch of back-and-forth claims that the trial judge was coached by the prosecutor, that Polanski had been told by judge/prosecutor that he the months he'd already served in prison would be the totality of his sentence, that his plea bargain deal was rescinded (which is not how that works), etc. The whole situation is a mess.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

I'm reading this, and In order for this to really become a thread worthy of the OT, at least one of you guys is going to need to defend Roman Polanski.
This is never going to turn into our usual 3 pages of screaming bitterly at each other followed by warnings and a lock unless and until at least one person says that 13 year old was in it for the money and was probably dressed provocatively, and that when you think about it, Roman Polanski is the real victim here. This civil discourse and common consensus is unseemly.
To reiterate, I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. You can do better, Dakka.
What if we jump in the opposite direction? Anyone want to advocate for sending in a military force to go get the guy, maybe implying that he should die "accidentally" in transit?

Which is why all parties are going to need to come to some agreement but everyone is to busy treating the other like they're the ones that need to get it together. The real kicker is that the US could request France to sentence him and I'd be fine with that assuming their idea of sentencing underage rape is to just tell him not to do it again while visiting the chataeu. I'm not out for blood but this needs to have some ending. Honestly I'd be fine with permanent deportation at this point.

Sounds like someone watched the Polanski: Wanted and Desired documentary.
Month he served in minimum security being evaluated. He never spent "months" in prison, just about a month and a bit shy of two weeks (42 days). Who thinks that 42 days for child rape is a normal amount of time for that?
Well yeah.
