So first off here is a compodium. ...

There are a slew of formations out there. Here is the question ...

Which formation is the most game breaking and which formation do you use? Which codex trumps all the others?

Let us be honest - formations are now part of the game. We give up ObSec in some cases to get powerful benefits and we see these formations crop up in a lot of tournament lists ( almost all). They are altering the meta for sure.

I've used the Helcult multiple times, but even with the cover saves a footslogging Multi-Melta + Power Fist Helbrute just doesn't pull its weight. Looking forward to using it with a long-ranged Helbrute though, keep one squad near it for cover saves and use the other to camp an objective or tarpit a unit.

What I really want to use is the Mayhem Pack. The idea of three deep striking vehicles just sounds great.

Can't really say which are great, but this is my hands on experience so far.

Skyblight is likely the best Formation. A Flyrant, 3 other Flying Monsteous Creatures and Obj Sec Gargoyles that can respawn on a 4+. Zero downsides.

But, Sanguine Wing is a very good runner up. 400pts of free power weapons and Combi-weapons in units that are prolly being taken anyway.

Tau Firebase Support Cadre is excellent; many Tau players already run a Riptide and 6 Broadsides, sure lets add Tank Hunter on there. I also like the new Angels Fury Spearhead(and I hold that you can assault on turn 1 without the sarges being out, read Embarked Units on pg 80 of the MRB).

Adamantine Lance makes imperial Knights worth taking if you've got 3 you want to use

Non Apoc? All the Covens ones are great, but the Scalpel Squadron unlocks null deployment lists, so that's probably the most useful.

Apoc? The White Dwarf DE one. With Ld shenanigans, it can get pretty obscene pretty quick.

FBSC. After that the lance. The flying Nid ones are great only because Nid codex requires Flyrant spam to be competitive. Must check out the covens thing properly.

If I had to pick just one formation? It'd have to be the Dark Artisan formation for Dark Eldar. It's a pick a deathstar option.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

Greentide is pretty solid.

Some of them can be extremely strong when taken as an ally for specialized armies they synergize well with. The militarum tempestus airborne assault and the astra militarum steel host can add a lot of pain to certain space marine or GK builds I imagine.

I don't see Nemesis Strike Force on the Compendium. Considering that's the big one for Grey Knights right now.

Ah, good looking out. Any chance of a detachment compendium?

Interesting to see the DE players sticking up for their codex, lol. Of course it should be mentioned again that many of these formations mean no ObSec but you can always take a CAD as well.

I play DE and I play Tau and I play 30k mechanicum. I have to say that Tau have a decent formation in the firebase support cadre and grotesquerie, scalpel and dark artisan formations for DE are all good.

Ork bully boys is a great formation for a codex that is not top tier.

Now the new Necron formations are decent as well but again I do not think game breaking.

Admantium Lance is probably the least troublesome of these formations - I mean either you have the means to deal with knights or you do not.

But none of these seem as game breaking as some of the Nid formations. And of course it is because you can spam Flyrants - you have cheap as chips troops and skyblight can allow you to return scoring gargs.

Formations are only a problem when they make a decent codex a whole lot better. When they elevate a codex that was a little weak I have less problems with them. The playing field becomes level and we get to see more interesting armies being firlded as well.
