A few years ago I bought a crapton of wh40k units. I think I was 12 or so, I'm 15 so there are financial restraints on any hobby for me. I really love painting and modeling figures and I want to get back into tabletop gaming. The thing is, I've never played a game. I've only bought figures and (barely) painted some of them. Which game do you guys recommend? Keep in mind, even if I choose to play wh40k, I'll be selling most if not all of what I have now because its just random units from different factions.

Thanks in advance guys

Deadzone is a fantastic sci-fi game that comes with everything you need in the starter box. Figures are inexpensive too, so they're budget-friendly.

First off: Welcome to the wonderful world of miniature wargaming! (How about that for a 1950s style public service short film title eh?)

Before you go much further you should figure out a few very important things:

1. What do you primarily want to get into the hobby for? Is it building and painting the models that makes you most interested? Playing more serious competitive games to test your generalship and improve your (and your opponent's) skill? Experiencing the interesting backstory of the game world and factions? Or just something to do with your friends and have a good time? Any of these motivations can be a fine reason, but different games cater better to different ambitions.

2. Do you currently know anybody who plays minature wargames so you can have a reliable opponent? Do you know a local game store (FLGS) where you can get games in? If yes to either of these, what games do your perspective opponents play? This is very important, especially for someone just getting into the hobby and is also on a limited budget (unless of course you are interested in this from a modeling perspective -- note that is painting and assembling, not fashion models ).

3. This one can be more secondary to the above two depending on your interests, but what kind of game do you want to play? As in, what settings do you like? Wargames can do everything from small squads of soldiers to massive armies, and they do it in all kinds of historical and made up genres. You will be spending a lot (a lot) of time assembling and painting your models. You want to have models from a game and faction you are interested in.

So, think over those questions, let us know, and we can direct you to the game that may work best for you.

Lastly, just a note, 40k is one of the more expensive games to get into because the armies are significantly larger than a lot of comparable games.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Thanks for the suggestion.
How popular is it? There's only one store around me for gaming and I'm not sure if they ever host games of it there.

1. Painting and modeling mainly, so something with a large amount of figured is best. Lore is also a plus. But I want to play it too, probably casually.
2. I don't know anyone who plays any wargames, but there is a FLGS that hosts matches for a bunch of wargames near me.
3. I'm not really sure what genre I like best, probably something sci-fi.

As has been said, if you can find out what is locally played then you'll have a better chance of getting games in.

I haven't played Deadzone, but it does look good.

Another game I haven't tried but am interested in is Warmachine / Hordes (Warmahordes) by privateer press. The two games work interchangeably and I'd recommend watching a few battle reports of it as it looks fast paced and fun (If I had anyone local playing it I'd go with the Warmachine faction Cryx - Undead Machines!). :-)

Necromunda is a no-longer produced or supported game but there are updated rules, alternative figures sources and an active community for it at yaktribe.org. It is based in the Warhammer 40k universe with gangs battling for survival and loot, but the main difference is that there is a progression and character development. Some gangers may excel at close combat, become an inventor or even suffer an old battle wound or head injury. What I like most is that each battle isn't a one-off thing with no consequences and you can watch your teams grow and change/etc.

Anyway, it mostly depends on what you want to create, model and paint... and what your local store plays. May I suggest finding your favourite of the models you already have and searching for its backs-story and the ruleset for it? :-)

Edit: Anyone mentioned Infinity?

The best value for money starters and games, along with excellent gameplay and lovely models around at the moment are Infinity which is a 28mm skirmish game and Dropzone Commander which is a 10mm strategic battle game.

Both have lovely models and excellent rules. DZC in particular is balanced, fast paced, fun and not won or lost in the army building phase.

Do a google and have a look!

Thank you to everyone who replied.

I'm going to build a Tau army, because I really like the look and already have 1 fire warrior unit and 3 stealth suit miniatures and WH40k is played around me. I think I'll look into Warmahordes at some point down the road though. I have a ton of miniatures, some assembled some not. Do people buy used ones or no? I'm looking to sell all the dark vengeance miniatures, a carnifex kit, one unit each of terma/hormagants, some warriors, a swarmlord kit, and some other things i might have laying around somewhere. Most of it is unpainted.

They sure do! eBay, bartertown, and this forum's swap shop all deal in used miniatures.

If you love the painting side go with Warhammer 40k or fantasy. Best models by far in my opinion and still a decently fun and entertaining game! Id stay clear of warmachine/hordes if you are more on the modeling side. Their miniatures are not the greatest.....

Another one to look into is flames of war if you like historical stuff. Models are a lot smaller but still very nice and the gameplay is great!

40k Orks 12000 points and growing
Ultramarines 2500
Salamanders 3500
Necrons 4000
Skitarii/cult mech 2500
Vampire Counts 3000 Points

I will as 40k models DO have a lot of options to build them how we you like if you don't care about the rules. Most of their kits are very interchangeable and have a variety of posing options.

Am I allowed to ask here how much I should sell it for? I have no idea what the value is.

It shouldn't be a problem- it depends on what you think it's worth. A few retailers sell NiB at 20% off- that's the baseline. Opened/assembled/etc goes for less, but if you have MADD Painting Skillzzz you might can sell for higher.

And before you post anything in the swap shop, be sure to read the rules and guidelines at the top of the subforum.

I'd recommend trying to trade for what you want. Make a list of the Tau units you want. Then list that and what you have (use pictures) here at the Dakka Swap Shop and at Bartertown. The great thing about trading is that often you'll find folks willing to trade in your favor if they really want what you have. If your stuff is unpainted or unbuilt you'll probably find takers. Even painted stuff will move, but you won't get nearly as much in exchange. If you don't like a trade offer, always feel free to make a counter-offer, the worst they can say is no.

Selling is fine, but trading will probably get you a better deal and if you don't get a trade offer you like, you can always sell it afterwards.
