Hi All,

I'm having trouble settling on a 30k army to play.

I'm currently debating the following three heavily:

- Mechanicum
- Night Lords
- World Eaters

I own a few Mechanicum models and enjoy the range, however, I also think the Astartes range is equally cool and own a NOS Sicaran.

What are the pros / cons of each army and what does Dakka suggest?

Cheers

I would say play the fluff you like best. I would probably play Deathguard, but thats because I like their look and fluff the best

My issue is that I like all three of their fluffs pretty equally.

Ad mech has the coolest models IMO. Why don't you make a night lord or world eater army with ad mech allies? That would cut the decision down to 2 and let you get whatever models you want from each army.

Ad mech has some amazing models.

They have some very cool high end weaponry too.
Depends what you want out of marines, with special rules both will play differently and favor different ways of working best

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

Don't forget you can do a bit of both Legions and Mechanicum through allies, so no need to waste any models you already have.

You could always do Iron Hands and use a Forge Lord and take the Cortex Controller to use some of the Mechanicum units in the army.

My vote is for Night Lords but I am biased. They have a game changing ROW, even better with Curze, good special units, good weapon upgrades, and one of the only Terminator forces that can get the deep strike ability without using a RoW. Their negative is pretty severe but hasn't bit me yet.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Mechanicum is the most interesting. Everyone else are just different kinds of space marine.

mechanicum is the cheapest army to play in real money terms.

and then can be allies if you wanna do the legion thing. win-win!

What's the downside to Night Lords?

You don't need to do Iron Hands to get the Cortex Controller. I think it's Siege Breakers that can take it? One of the Consuls can at least.

I'd go with whichever legion you pick and Mechanicum allies or Mechanicum units with a Cortex Controller. Out of the two I'd go Night Lords but that's purely because I'm not too keen on the World Eaters.

I'll tell you your favorite 30K army if you can tell me what my favorite beer is

Just keep reading about them, looking at models. You'll come to the realization sooner or later that you like one of those three armies more than the other two.

Downside to Night Lords is their cult of personality rules. If the warlord dies every NL unit on the board needs to make a morale check or they say screw it and start running away. They can rally as Legion Astartes rules allow even units under half strength rally with no negatives.

Another nice benefit of NL is they gang up on other units. If you outnumber a unit you get +1 to wound in close combat. jump pack guys and termies count for two models.

And lets face it, they have the coolest color scheme of any legion.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.

Exactly what I did. With mechanicum stuff being able to drop into both elite and heavy slots, you can do quite a bit without the allies tax.

Mix World Eaters and Mechanicum.
Play them as a mixed traitor force or something (maybe the mechanicus are studying how the butcher's nails worked?).

Otherwise, try making melee Mechanicum armies

I am personally biased towards Night Lords, but I do I like them 30K World Eaters. With Kurze on the scene now I would probably go with NLs. Without primarchs, WE.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

I'm going to follow folks advice and run AdMech / Night Lords together.

Any suggestions for combined lists? From a modelling perspective, I think i'd like to pick up a Glaive here soon and potentially a flyer.

I've also been eyeing a Knight Lancer but I can't justify the price for it when I can just as soon pick up a GW Knight Errant / Paladin.

legio cybernetica mecanicum - a couple of castellax and a magos are quite cheap. the castellax is a troops choice for cybernetica and the magos can be left standard and lumped with one of the castellax, buffing it with cyberturgy. give the other 'paragon of metal' and throw it at the enemy!

if going down the knight route, get a knight magera - similar points but with crazy technology!
