So lists are popping up now in the army list section and I've been asked a few questions and Really have not got all the answers. I have not played mechanicus long enough to be expert.
Now there are a few basic lists ... Ordo Reductor or Legio Cybernetica. You can ally the two. LoWs must not exceed 25% of your total list - this includes IKs in mechanicus. However if you use the onslaught FoC you van get two IKs in.
There are four books - Betrayal, Massacre, Extermination, Conquest so it is expensive to start a mechanicus army.

I will present a list that at 1500 is a sample of what can be done in Legio Cybernetica - which is what I play. This is a list that is simple to master for newcomers to mechanicus. It is a very elite list which is what legio cybernetica is all about. Just the twenty models will cost you a bit and adding the books makes this an expensive proposition. So if you want to play mechanicus be prepared to spend around 800+ for a 1500 point list.

HQ 220
2x Magos Dominus – Cyber Familiar, Abeyant (warlord with mechanica protectiva)

Troops: 1130
2x 4 Castallax - Mauler Cannons
3x 3 Thallax - Multi-melta

FA: 150
Avenger Strike Fighter

Legio cybernetica uses non IC HQs. This means you have to protect them as they are used to control the programmed behaviour of your bots ( in this list Castallax). The HQs have cortex controllers to allow this. The Castallax can be buffed with cybertheurgy but you fail and there are consequences - they might even turn on each other (I've seen it happen and it is brutal).

The list above hides the HQs behind a wall of eight MCs. It also has three squads of jet pack infantry and a flyer ( has errata to have 3 HP).

Now we have other units in a cybernetica list. The Thanatar is a beefy heavy support MC that with paragon of metal is near impossible to kill. We have elite technicians and myrmidons, fast attack, vorax, heavy support myrmidons and tech thralls. Cybernetica does not really use tech thralls as they are capped at ten and do not get all the upgrades but still ten fearless troops with S$ cost only fifty points.

So ask questions - post thoughts on units and lets get this started.

I'm looking at bringing Taghmata as an ally for my Guard for 40k, not sure what to bring. Right now I have a 2 squads of Thallax with photon thrusters.

Well a Thanatar would also be nice. I find a Thanatar with paragon of metal and crazy big threat although pricey on the table. Of course you could just take an IK but that costs you a few more points.

Thallax do a few things well. They have djinn-sight - so -2 to cover saves and no infiltration within 24". They are jet pack.

I use them with multi-melta and lightning guns in squads of three to go after broadsides, MCs like WK and DK and Riptide, backfield dev squads, etc. But they are troops in a mechanicus list with three wounds a piece. Having two S7 guns and a multi-melta helps them threaten tough units and vehicles. You can also gibve them melta bombs.

The Ordo Reductor - the guy's who make wonderful things like the Landraider Achillies, but can't use them in battle..
