Subject: Warhammer 40,000 Learning Game Imperial Fists vs. Nids (Seriously worth the watch!)
Great report as always! I enjoyed his look of confusion at things like "twin-linked"
My only feedback would be perhaps more shots of the action? Maybe I'm just too used to the usual FLG reports where it's almost all close-ups of the table. I'm just being nitpicky though, very entertaining and well-produced overall.

Yeah, 100%! Haha, he had beginner's luck, big time.
@Jambles
Thanks! And I think having more action shots would have helped a ton, too. We're investing into some better equipment, so hopefully soon, this level of quality report will become the norm.
This was a good video! I like what you guys did here!

I like seeing them just messing around having a good time. I feel like a competitive enviroment makes it "less" fun. I normally dont watch alot of the FLG bat reps, but this one was really great. Made me giggle.

I like this style of battle reports, and I think you did a great job. I do have two criticisms, though:
1. I had a hard time staying on top of everything that was going on at times, and parts of the battlefield were almost ignored (such as where the Trygon landed, all I got from that was that it was over there and so was something else and then stuff died or whatever).
2. Towards the end it kinda petered off to a superficial narrative about four guys enjoying a game of 40k, which is obviously the way to go about it for a video introducing 40k to the uninitiated (which is what it seemed like this video was aiming for). If you could continue with reports like this and keep up providing information on everything that's going on the tabletop all the way through, I think it could be amazing.
Anyway, I'm a longtime viewer of your battle reports, and I'm excited and hopeful that you'll continue with this format.

Spoken in super nerdy voice, "Um, that hive guard shot on the landspeeder would have been a weapon destroyed result, as it is open topped and you didn't add 1 to the damage result"
Hahahaha, but in all seriousness, it is always nice to see new players take an interest in the game, and you guys have done a great job attempting to show that even though the game is super complex, it is still super complex... but can be tons of fun!
And hot damn those incontrol seize rolls!

Yeah, we are still learning how to make videos better. We're investing into some really nice video/audio equipment to try and hit that level of quality on a regular basis. It will take a while to get there, but that was the test run, so to speak. Our goal is to make professional level videos.
Great video. I really liked the way the location was set up and how professional it looked. Using a fixed HD camera as opposed to a handheld makes a world of difference in quality. Only thing I could suggest would be to do some overhead shots so you can see where everything is at.

I liked the video. I didn't watch it all the way through as I could tell it was largely an "introduction to 40K' style batrep, and I typically enjoy more tactic and strategy focused reports.
If you at FLG go this route with your reports in terms of production value, i'm all for it. I like the multiple camera angles, lighting, etc. 30-60 minutes is a good time frame for a battle report video, much longer than that and it feels too drawn out - I enjoy turn by turn summary with a few key action shots etc.
Great job, keep reports coming and good luck on getting your new equipment to keep this quality up.
Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

I enjoyed the style of video a lot. Not necessarily the introduction to 40k kind, but the quality of the video. Very professional. I don't mind the time. I often watch 2 hrs videos. If done to this quality, I'll make the time to watch it.
Just as a comparison (in viewer preference), I both enjoy the "rolling-all-the-dice" style as well as the "end-of-phase-explanation" style.
As for a few additions to what I liked, I liked when the teams described their strategies going into the next turn. You guys used to do that with the in-store batreps but you seemed to stop doing that. With this kind of professional (in this particular video), I found it very appropriate and helpful. The helpful highlights (with a computer program, highlighting deployment and gun range distances) make it very easy to see what you guys are describing. Even as a more experienced players like myself, I enjoyed it because in some batreps you have no idea what is going on in regards to board control and distances between models. The top view really clarifies it all.
As a final note, inControl really hit it home with all his explanations throughout the video. Especially towards the end when he was promoting the game as a whole.

No, we will not only be making learning videos, we will be doing both narrative and competitive bat reps.
I agree 100% that better angles on models to help show the action would be better. Sometimes you couldn't tell what we were talking about.
Our goal is always 30 minutes, but, it is really hard to condense a 3 hour game down to 30 minutes and still capture all the fun and action. I think between 30-60 minutes is the best bet without cutting it down to just the basics of what happened.
We should be up and running with videos like this by March, we're in the process of buying all the equipment now, and then have to learn to use it properly.
I think this format would be really well suited to "strategy review" videos, where you can have a little turn summary in between with the new graphics etc. Since this was a "learning" video makes sense that you guys didn't get too bogged down by explaining every combat etc., just hitting the main events of each turn. Still really like the in-store batreps as the casual format, and I'm sure they're easier to crank out than having to go through all the post production and setup for this video. You guys are the face of the hobby for a lot of people, and great at showing that you don't have to be a neckbeard/supernerd to enjoy wargaming.
Keep doing what you're doing!

Welcome back to the game Max. Keep those dice hot Good rep as usual. Been watching you guys forever.
Likes:
Fat mat. Just so good looking.
Terrain. Nice and grim dark.
New film studio. More space is always good for war gamers
Painted armies. Goes with the terrain, and looks good on film.
Overhead rig for lighting and cameras. Good for the top down stuff.
Post turn commentary. Nice to see thought process's and tactics.
Banter. The reason why I've watched your stuff so long, you guys.
Constructive criticism:
Long bat reps can go. Short and sweet is preferable. Special cases deserve more time, but in general I don't need to see every dice roll. I'll watch the beginning and end of long ones, but cannot guarantee >> won't be used :p
New film studio is pretty barren. Most likely a work in progress, it'll be nice once you have some posters/FLG banners and maybe some display armies up. Doesn't feel like 'home' yet is all.
Long range camera work is meh. While more professional with a fixed camera, I couldn't see jack. Something you'll work out I'm sure just have Raw D. As the floating camera man
Looking forward to more reps Your crew of gamers is always fun to watch.

While in most cases I agree that bat reps should be shorter, I think this was fine at it's length.
You have to look at the purpose of the video. This is a beginners introduction. So if you cut it down too much, then nobody will learn anything. You need to have explanations of turns and events.
But I liked this report a lot and think that it served its purpose very well.
Yeah, short vs. long format is something we always wrestle with. We want them to be no more than 30 minutes, but it can be quite challenging condensing down a 2-3 hour game into that little time and still tell the story and capture the fun moments. We will keep working on it, though.
