Almost done with "unremembered empire" and read about there being six specialist wings within the Dark Angels. They are my favorite chapter and legion by far and the Lion my favorite primarch so I never tire of learning new info about one of the more secret legions. I wanted to hear peoples thoughts on the identity and role each wing based on clues from books and a little educated guessing. Here is my take:

1. Deathwing- Elite kill team oriented taking on hard targets;One of the more elite wings as an officer escorts the lion on maccrage. Crossed swords icon. officer carries an executioners sword which i believe was ceremonial. If it must die, send the Deathwing.
2. Dreadwing- Also elite wing that is more of an anvil to the deathwings hammer, im thinking hard core frontline/close combat fighters that can take as much as they can dish out. skull in hourglass icon. officer caries a huge axe and also escorts the Lion. i toyed with the idea of them being the legion destructors or whatever that use radiation and chemical weapons but im thinking more of the former explanation.
3. Stormwing- Assault wing dedicated to establishing beachheads ala DDay and ship boarding actions and likely jump pack squads. Curze points out an assault squad as stormwing before he kills them all and they are armed with boarding shields.
++ as a note the rest are more speculation than the previous 3++
4. Ravenwing- there has been debate if they even exist in heresy era Dark Angels but the whole reason the wings exist at all is the first legion had to act on its own and have specialists in all forms of warfare so it stands to reason that a scouting advanced recon force would exist even if it wasnt renamed until later.

that leaves us with 2 wings unnamed and with no clear role so i will use process of elimination to guess at the final 2.
one of the types of battle unreprisented so far in my opinion is heavy support.
5. Ironwing?- heavy support in the form of medium and heavy tanks/ devastator squads ect. armored support seems like a sure bet though the Ironwing name is old and hasnt been confirmed in the official canon.
6. ..... idk guys i have toyed with the idea of like a stealthly wing ghostwing or something, an air support wing, and a gunslinger wing but they either seemed too un-knightly or not practical.

The Dark Angels were the prototype legion and needed to capable of all facets of space marine warfare. These wings function much like Eldar aspect warriors, specializing in one type of warfare. Later legions were free to specialize completely in one of these roles, so I assume the roles of the different Dark Angels wings can be derived from them.

Which specializations can we find in later legions?

Shock assault: Blood Angels, World Eater, Space Wolves - DA equivalent: Death wing
Mechanized warfare: Iron Hands - DA equivalent: Iron Wing?
Maneuver warfare: White scars, Luna Wolves - DA equivalent: Storm Wing?
Covert ops: Raven Guard, Alpha legion - DA equivalent: Raven Wing
Siege Warfare: Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors - DA equivalent: unknown?
Psychological warfare: Night lords, Word bearers - DA equivalent: Dread Wing?

Some other specializations like psychic warfare (thousand sons) and NBC (death guard) seem a bit out of character for the Dark Angels. Jack of all trades like the Ultramarine and Emperor's Children are probably similar to the DA marines who not part of any wing.

I believe your thinking of the stormwing friend. The dreadwings task is never mentioned
