Today I was nicely surprised by my housemate bringing back a haul of old fantasy and 40k books from a charity shop. I've got no idea about any of them, I assume they're in no way cannon, predating Black Library.
Space Marine, Chaos Child and Inquisitor by Ian Watson, Beasts in Velvet and Genevieve Undead by JAck Yeovil and Warblade by David Ferring.

Not a bad find at all.
Inquisitor was one of my FIRST fiction novels I bought. If you can get your hands on the full trilogy (think its now done as a all in one big book), get ahold of it. It was written in the days of Rogue Trader so some of the stuff may seem wonky by today's standard of fluff. They "fixed" this by putting it forth as an old manuscript that is poorly regarded by the inquisition as being invalid (much as nessie and bigfoot sightings today).
Congrats.

Sweet man, I know most players would kill to add 'What is Microhistory,' to their collections.

I read the first Inquisitor novel... wonky is an understatement. It's not poorly written, it just veers so far off the path of how we now view the 40k universe as to be jarring.

90% of charity shops I've found no nothing about it.
Great bargains to be had rarely.

Long story short I did nicely.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all. |

Oh dear, that wasn't supposed to be in the picture, I'm a history student
I got into 40k at the tail-end of 3rd ed, so I know that they're going to be pretty alien to me. Pretty good find though.

Space Marine was rereleased by Black Library as print on demand labelled as a 'Heretic Tome', though if memory serves a lot of the characters from it were in the Imperial Fists Index Astartes article, as was the pain glove. Personally I like it.
Inquisitor was rereleased by Black Library under the name Draco.

Chaos child is Book 3 in the Inquisitor War series, Inquisitor (renamed Draco) is the first.. You need Harlequin to get the full trilogy. Not a good trilogy but it was my first foray into 40k as well. A fun enough sci-fi book but not even slightly believable with modern canon.
