Many years ago (well not too many) I played oblivion a lot and loved it.

I went back to it last night by purchasing the the complete edition off steam.

Its almost as wonderful as I remember it. The munted tater faces are a bit funny and the fact that I cant retract my arrows forever pains me, but overall its got me addicted again.

Im about to murder some beggar to attract the dark brother hood because if my memory is correct, those guild missions were amazingly fun and somewhat sinister at times.

A vampire khajiit master assasin.

Anyone else been playing it recently?

Even after all these years I still discover new things.

Over the years I have tried to go back to it a couple of times, but each time I get put off by the zoom-in-faces when speaking and the slower/less 'realistic' weapon animations.

That said, there are some things I miss from it, particularly the spell creation. Yes, it was OP, but that was part of the fun. Nothing like walking into a room full of Bandits, popping a Range: Touch Radius: 20 feet Drain Health 100 points spell with a duration of 1 second. If the enemy have greater health than 100, then it does nothing, but if not, then everyone in the room is dead... Cue manical laughter.

Yea its unfortunate that the faces look that way, but pausing in time for me is fine for the talking.

Have you tried playing through the quests again though? I just remembered (I may be wrong) but for example in the thieves guild you cannot harm anyone in your missions. So you actually had to do these crazy sneaking missions and elaborate plots to steal items.

But the faces took some getting used to, plus the weapons seem a bit light. But what game is without its flaws eh?

Oh, yeah, it did have some great quests. The Fighters Guild plot arc and the latter part of the Mages Guild one were very cool, and some of the misc quests are very memorable (one from Bruma where you go north to recover some Akaviri artefacts was a good one). Oblivion Gates were cool too, easily as interesting and more varied than the Dragons of Skyrim.

I would love to see a redone edition of Oblivion, the same characters/settings/quests ported over to the Skyrim engine, levelling system and and visuals. That has the potential to easily end up better than Skyrim itself.

Unfortunately im one of "THOSE" people who didnt enjoy skyrim. But a remastered edition of the game would be great, although the graphics arent too bad as they are. Especially down in the shivering isles.

But all the quests are flooding back into my memory. Like the guy who tricks you into picking up the magic heavy ring, or the mission where you are hunted like game in a sick maze and the list goes on. Thats one of the big things I love about the game.

Also I think all the demons and gods have missions as well. Each one with followers and each one offering rewards and so on.

Oblivion definitely had better story lines than Skyrim. Save the Companions (I didn't think the Fighter's Guild was very good in Oblivion), but the Thieves Guild and Darkbrotherhood and the main quest line were all vastly better.

Agreed. Also, Skyrim was literally much larger than Tamriel, but didn't feel as large.

Yea I was surprised to hear Skyrim had a bigger map.

Man I wish I could that today. I wouldnt mind vegging out and playing it today myself. Not playing it for 5+ years is probably the closest ill ever get to playing it for the first time again.

Just nitpicking here- Tamriel is the continent, Skyrim is a country in Tamriel, Cyrodiil is where Oblivion is set.
But I agree.
My favourite quest is probably the one where you have to go into a painting. Beautifully magical.

I'd love to see a remastered edition of Oblivion. I think all in all the story was better then Skyrim's, so if it could get a graphical overhaul, I'd totally dive back into it.

The graphics are pretty good I think.

Isnt too much difference. Skyrim looks dirtier but has more shading though. The faces however are definitely miles apart.

I think if you played the game again, you will find the graphics are pretty good. I dont think the first screen shot is even in HD or full settings either, since on my computer it looks even better than that screen shot.

Not sure if you care, but there is a modding group that's remaking both Morrowind (for the true-masochists) and Oblivion for use with the Skyrim engine. I can't recall the name of the group nor the title of the remastered games, but it's a pretty popular up and coming release.

Also, I loved Oblivion too but Skyrim made the franchise better - if cheapening the overall TES feel.

Eh I care not for skyrim, but my friends dad has been a huge part of modding morrowind for years. He even took his sons (my friends faces) and put them into the game etc.

Morrowind can be a truly beautiful game with that communities mods all put together.

But yea not really interested in Skyrim. I like RPGs. Even Oblivion has been streamlined somehwat from the more traditional RPG systems.

I hope the next Elder Scrolls game brings back the RPG mechanics of Oblivion and Morrowind. I love the world of Skyrim, the current graphics, art design, and especially the Werewolves and Vampires, but it gets annoying having to mod RPG mechanics into a game that should already have them.

Hopefully the next game takes place in Elsewyr. And is an actual RPG.

Because again, downloading several gigs of mods just to make an RPG game an actual RPG is annoying. Although I certainly don't miss weapons breaking.

So is it a total conversion for Skyrim then?

I honestly want the next game in Summerset. Let's overthrow the Thalmor

Elsewyr would be cool too. Or Blackmarch. Or any province really. Honestly I don't care XD. There'd be cool stuff to see in all of them.

You can't set a game in Black Marsh. Nobody can survive there except Argonians and people with a lot of cure disease potions.

Yeah, I am betting Hammerfell. They are still fighting the Thalmor, are independent of the Empire. Lots of potential, even if I hope they come up with something better than saaaaand.

I would love to just kill those jerks. I hate the Thalmor. Those are the only types of elves I wouldn't mind seeing become extinct.

Oblivion was my early teenage years, and holds a special place in my heart, even if I am more partial to morrowind. The quests were great and the dungeons were so much fun. I had a character who only explored Ayleid ruins and did quests connected to them, and I got many hours out of that character. Like morrowind you could really role play a character based off your stats, you didn't have to do every quest in the game because there was enough for every type of character to do

Morrowind is for the masochists? Get out. Arena is by far the most difficult, as most of the time you'll lose to the starting dungeon.

The worst morrowind had was "loading" in the middle of nowhere. Which is weird, as the map in Daggerfall was much bigger(about 63,000 square miles, if memory serves).

Plus, for all you. Newcomers to the series, Daggerfall takes place in High Rock and Hammerfell.

Both Arena and Daggerfall were absurdly hard games. In both games you rarely made it out of the starting dungeon alive. Didn't help you either that the first two games had a lot of enemy variety, all of whom were also incredibly deadly. IIRC I once downloaded Arena and tried it out, then rage-quit as it harder then bloody Dark Souls +.

If you want a challenge, install Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO). It updates a lot of the graphics and changes the game considerably, adding some small features like poisoned treasure, and it completely re-vamps the leveling system. Here is a link, not sure if this is the correct one:

http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/OOO/

Just to add...that link is OOO 1.33, they are on 1.35 now...not sure where it is.

There's little point to re-playing Oblivion if you got Skyrim, tbh :/

The game's pretty much unplayable...unenjoyable without mods though. Whoever thought of the ridiculous auto-scaling enemies should be ashamed of himself and his profession.

/e: Whoever posted that Skyrim screenshot better be installing mods naow!

I too hope Hammerfell for the next game, cities dotted around the edge of the map and then huge swathes of desert in the middle could be interesting, and of course, scimitars for all! Setting it in Blackmarsh or Elsewyr would really put me off, though. In general, I find Kajiit and Argonians annoying even as peripheral characters, so a whole map where they are the dominant race would be very boring for me.

One thing Oblivion certainly had over Skyrim was the greater array of true fantasy stuff you could find. Skyrim, I think, would really benefit from the inclusion of more Daedra, Minotaurs, Goblins, all the 'high fantasy' stuff Oblivion had in bucketloads, and less of the pseudo-historical like mammoths and sabre cats. Really, throwing in as much Fantasy stuff as possible would do me, from wingless Drakes underground to Sea Serpents in water, Minotaurs and Ogres, that kind of thing.

Ultimately, though, I would like to see Elder Scrolls VI be Tamriel. I am pretty sure the next-gen engines could handle multi-province maps, and it would be awesome to literally have the whole Empire (including bits that have already been done) to explore in one game.

I think the cat and lizard men honestly have some of the most interesting (and underdeveloped) lore in Elder Scrolls. They're the butt monkeys of the series thus far, always filling in the same shady rolls (and so much skooma).

I'd love a game that presented the various species of Khajit (or at least more than two or three). The politics of Elsewyr are really interesting, and the Khajit have a different religious disposition from the other races.

Black Marsh I think just opens doors for lots of fun. Slave trade. Tribal organization instead of the more feudal one's we've been seeing. The Hist are returning to Tamriel. This one could also have a cool story about the Argonian nationalist movement and the war against Morrowind.
