Hey Dakka,

I hope this post is in the right spot.

I am just getting back into 40k after a few years departure. I noticed in the SM codex that tactical squads have bolt pistols listed as one of their weapons. I am assuming this means every marine carries this as the sgt has the option to change to a bolt pistol and chainsword. Previous editions of the SM codex don't contain this and I have never seen this represented on a model. Is it accurate to say all models can (including heavy weapons) fire bolt pistols instead of boltguns and charge in the same turn.

Have i been missing something?
Do people take advantage of this?

Thanks

Matt

Yes, and whilst used and is very good since they can charge afterwards, it still isn't good enough for marine players as they are suggesting gaining the relentless special rule just so they can shoot their bolters and then charge.

As far back as I have books for the marines, the Bolt Pistol is listed in the SM Tac Squad wargear, so I can't comment on if it never had it.

However, yes, all Tac squad models (and any units that list it as wargear) have bolt pistols and may fire those instead of their boltgun or heavy weapon. The bolt pistol does not prevent a charge (Rapid Fire and Heavy do).

It's used to great effect here

It's a relatively new addition, from around 5th edition or so. It's effectively just a way to firlinke one shot before charging in.

I quite like it on my Blood Angel-Tactical Marines.
It allows them to use the H. Flamer, fire with Pistols and then charge in with FC and Red Thirst.

Is it commonly represented on the model? or it just assumed its there like all the extra magazines space marines don't carry.

Agreed. Even before we had I5 and S5 on the charge, my Tacticals would be popping the pistols out for a quick shot before getting knee-deep in Xenos guts.

A lot of players don't, as it's not mandatory. However, if you're like me and focus on making Tactical Squads as interesting as anything else in the army, then there's a lot of modelling opportunities for them.
