Do the "official" games still allow the usage of original, 1984 genre 40K minis?

I have decided that I want to re-build the Legion that I originally had when the game came out, which would include around 150 of the plastic "beaky" marines, plus around 30 of the metal beaky marines, and about 20 or so of the original terminators.

I have seen a few on eBay, and I figure it might take me a year or so to get all of the models (including original robots and Dreadnaughts).

But I would rather have the originals than the newer stuff, which AI do not much care for.

I'd actively encourage you to.

As for the "official" rules, beaky or not, Marines are Marines. There's been some changes to their arsenal over the decades, but that's nothing a hobby knife, greenstuff and glue cannot fix.

As for vehicles, Forgeworld sells some cool upgraded versions of old RT-era designs under their Horus Heresy range.

The short answer is to check with your FLGS. The official policy IIRC is that any GW model is fine to use. Unofficially, some people have issues with things like terminators on small bases, or the fact that the old rhinos are smaller then the modern ones.

That said, I field old RTB01 beekies in most of my lists, carted around in their slightly undersized rhinos. Nobody has ever said anything negative. YMMV

I have an army full of RT era marines. Never been a problem. In fact, people usually love it!

Yes, and if anyone takes issue with it tell them to get over it.

The only flak that would come up is people complaining that the old models are smaller and give an advantage. If they say that then just tell them to deal

Just make sure you don't play Zilka.

Which is usually only an issue with the more extreme changes, like the tiny RT-era Eldar Avatar, or the lowrider Ork truck.

A poster on here who had a thread a little while ago complaing about how he had to buy new models all the time because you 'can't use models from previous editions.'

I know in out area there was a guy who was using the old terminators on there original bases mixed with new terminators so that he could make the deep strike footprint smaller. People were not really happy with that.

I got a box of the old termies and just based them on new bases to avoid issues and arguments.

I rebased about thirty or so terminators onto bigger bases once I started getting new kits just so that they'd be consistent.

There are a few 2nd edition marines in there, but mostly built from RTB01’s

The main thing holding me back from buying new terminators is the basing issue. I’d like 5 more assault terminators, and some new TDA characters, but don’t want to bother rebaseing all my old ones, and don’t want to mix base sizes.

I wouldn't really object to the way your army is setup, your not doing it to gain an advantage, the person I was referring to does specifically to gain an advantage. he runs them with 1 old termie as the center for deep strike and the rest new termies.

those are really nice! I haven't actually seen many painted RT mini's, but those ones look really clean and the conversions are done really well! the techmarine is probably my favorite

Thanks! The techmarine was a big job with lots of parts from different kits, but I love how he turned out.

It’s worth noting that the new tactical squad box has all the parts needed to make old Mk. VI beakies. There is a little bit of scale creep going on, but you can capture the old school feel with new plastics. I used the new bits to get some fresh blood into one of my old squads, as I have plenty of ML/F squads (which is what you got with RTB01)

Because old models are also legal. As legal as new models.

Plus, think less 'out of date' and more 'classic'.

I love the retro minis, and have wondered what the reaction would be if I showed up with my 2nd Edition Squat army, intending to play them as Imperial Guard. Who's else codex would I use?

But anyway, I love the old models. I think they add a lot of character, so long as they represent what they are supposed to be. Like the old old Chaos Dreadnought in place of a Hellbrute. If someone had a problem with it, I am sure they wouldn't be they kind of person you would want to play against even if you had the exact same minis has him.

'Cause the old legal models are just as good, and already finished?
