So, I'm trying to plan out future purchases I like the Tryanid models a lot and while flipping through an older codex I noticed the rules for mutable genus models. My big question so far is this still a thing? If so it adds a lot of diversity to 'Nids
Also besides 5 Flyrants where is the best place to start nids? Thanks in advance.

Nids have a lot of great builds.
I never use more than 3 Flyrants(it's overkill)
30 Termigaunts is a good place to start for your troops as it also gives you rippers.
Malanthrope or Venomthrope(if no forge world) is next to manditory for most builds.
A carnifex or 3 is a good go to for your heavies(also they are cheap now due to the new baal battle box)

It is nowhere as mutable as it used to be. The Biomorphs are VERY toned down and honestly, it almost turned me off to Nids in 7th when I returned to the hobby. The biggest diversity is with what Formations or what way you want to take the army. Living Artillary Node can make a very shooty list using Gargoyles and Hive Crones to move even faster ahead with Venomthropes providing Shrouded. A Forge World Dima (long name, can't spell it) leads to Tyrannocytes, Outflanking Tervigons and other ways to break out in the enemy territory reliably. How you play or want to learn to play will really change the list you try to build.

The Biomorph thing is a bit disappointing as that was what interested me the most in them. as for army composition I think nids and Dark Eldar offer the best mix of diversity/power.
I'm thinking termagants (which if my math works out two boxes is about 30) Tervigon or tyrannofex can't decide, biovores, zoathropes, hivecrones and mabe some spore mines for lols. Eventually going for some Tyranocytes. Sound good?

You need a lot more than thirty models if you want a Tervigon. On average it poops out an extra 23 or some such number. Other than that the only thing missing from your list is the Flying Hive Tyrant. It's one of those units that is just THAT good and needs to be included. I don't use one as my Warlord, and I only use one because I play casually, but it is just too good to pass up on.
Spore Mines have some formations that can do something on the table. The Sporefield is apparently worth the points in casual games (according to folks smarter than me).
Wrath of the Hive Mind is a strong box set and can get you going sooner. Some savings in there too. But yes, it is a solid start to an army.

3 Flyrants.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

if you wanna run the 3 flyrant list you'll need a copy of sheild of baal levithan for the detachment rules. the fluff in it is actually pretty good I found it good reading

How flexible is your local gaming group?
I wouldn't strictly rule out a game with someone playing strictly by an old codex, personally. If you know people for whom that might also be true, then there's no reason you couldn't run nids using those rules that you like.

Well in my area there are about 5 40k players that I know of so finding a game could prove a challenge with out having to drive the 30 minutes to the nearest gw so I want to avoid a label s tfg if at all possible. However I do agree with you that it wouldn't hurt anything to have a player go by an old codex provided they try and bring anything else.
