Hi,

I had an argument yesterday with a guy proposing that you have to roll for players table edges and then again for first turn, which I thought, was one and the same roll?

how do you handle which player takes which table edge?

To quote the rulebook.

battle field section:

"The deployment map included with Warhammer 40,000 missions will usually show each player's table edge. If it does not, or you are using a mission you have made yourselves, you will need to decide where each players table edge is before the battle."

deployment section:

"1. Roll off [...] winner decides who will deploy first.
2. The side deploying first must set up all the units in their army.
3.THen the other side sets up all the units in their army.
4.The player who deployed first can choose to take the first or second turn. [...] opponent can seize the initiative."

Thanx!

The part you quoted makes it pretty clear that you determine table zones before rolling for first turn (because the book tells you roll for first turn later

the part says: if you do not use 40K missions THEN you have to decide beforhand otherwise the 40K missions have it in their description.

Just to add to this, it's a combination of the rules presented in "The Battlefield" section of the missions (starting page 142 in the BRB), and then you move on to the "Standard Deployment Method" presented on page 132.

I just follow the sections in the mission description in order. Generally if I'm not doing "a mission" then it's just a kill points game and that's really all Purge The Alien (page143) is.

So in this case, you complete the steps listed in "The Battlefield", then move on to the "Deployment" section etc.

The deployment map included with Warhammer 40,000 missions does not tell you which player gets which table edge.
The rule you quoted is for custom missions where one person deploys in the center (for example) and their opponent's "table edge" is every table edge.

So why does the rulebook itself says so?: "The deployment map included with Warhammer 40,000 missions will usually show each player's table edge." It is not for custom missions it says for regular missions - for custom missions you should decide yourselves which player has which edge.

(I know that the pictures do not specify - I think because of it takes place, when you deploy.)

And they do show each player's table edge. They're denoted "Side A table edge" and "Side B table edge".
What they don't say is "Tyranid player's table edge" and "Imperial Scum table edge".
Or "Bob's table edge" and "Sam's table edge".

1) First you decide which side you deploy on (what you're referring to). 2) Then you decide who deploys first. 3) Then you move to "First Turn"

This is specified in the mission - and the missions in the 40k book all have the same entry for First Turn.
Spoiler:
FIRST TURN
The player that set up first can choose to take the first or second turn. If they decide to take the first turn, their opponent can attempt to Seize the Initiative.

So once deployment is done, there's no re-roll to see who goes first.

It looks like you're conflating steps 1 and 2 - that's incorrect. There's on rule for picking which side someone deploys on - I usually let my opponent pick which side he wants. After that you roll to see who deploys first, and then the person who deploys first has the option to take First Turn.
