I think you must take a decurion detachment to be able to take desthbringer flight.

Why? It's a formation.

He can[img] take the formation but he won't benefit from the special formation rules unless it's part of a Decurion detachment.

I would drop the doomscythe formation and bring the canoptek harvest formation. Gets you another squad of wraiths, some scarabs, and the ability to get RP.

You can take formations anytime.

Why is that?

I see nothing in the rules to indicate that you don't receive formation benefits as you usually would. OP won't benefit from Ever-living, obviously, but I don't think that's what you're talking about.

Ugh, the Decurion Detachment offers bonuses to all formations and units that are a part of it.

those individual formations have their own bonuses as well and can just be taken with a normal cad. They do not lose their formation bonus by not being part of the Decurion Detachment, the only thing they lose is the Decurion Detachment bonus.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

I have to deal with Flyrants and flying demons. Doomscythes can hit them with Str 10 and fairly acutatrly with this formation. I'd love to get them all in turn one. At 1850 I'd go Zandrekh for turn 2 warlord trait shenanigans. Getting all those flyers on in one go would be boss for some beta strike action (along with a hopeful turn 2 charge with the wraiths).

your doomscythes cant touch flyrants or flying deamons because blast weapons.

All of the things. Most of the time.

That's not true.

I was very strongly under the impression that zooming MC and flyers could never be hit by blast weapons.

All of the things. Most of the time.

Your gonna have to ground the MC to target him with a template

You can hit a flyer with a template if you also are a flyer.

Zooming flyers can not be hit with templates or blasts, but FMC can be as written in BRB as long as the weapon has skyfire.

Anyway, aren't the Doomscythes a few notches below the Wraiths in terms of efficiency ?

It seems to me you could go as far as ignore air and concentrate on being an absolute threat on the ground.

Tournament lists with 5 flyrants are doing well. At least this list can kill a couple when the fliers come in. Which is why I'd take Zandrekh at 1850 over other units. He can opt for the warlord trait on turn two that gives you plus one to reserves. as for the Blasts hitting FMC - they certainly can RAW. And tournemnts I've gone to allow this as well. The Doom scythes should be pretty handy for dealing with backfield tanks that are swerving the Wraiths as well.
