Its bigger than it sounds. Medieval coinage used a monetary system inherited from the Romans which is very similar to the UK decimal system, one hundred pennies to a pound. and this fifty two quids 'worth' mentioned is in fact 5251 silver coins buried from the Anglo Saxon era, valued at £1.3 million and found recently by a treasure seeker with a metal detector.

Many of these silver coins, dating from King Canute, are in excellent condition as they were wrapped in a lead sheet.
Nice hoard.

I gotta imagine a lead sheet alone is probably worth something nowadays.

I use to go "treasure hunting" with a metal detector
I found a lot of quarters, nickles, dimes and pennies.
costume jewelry
part of a mortar shell
and a time capsule which contained
-fishing tackles
-pogs
-scratch and sniff stickers
-a pack of football cards - a notable player in the pack was Ryan Leaf
I feel lucky.

Probably at slightly 'better' odds than your typical scratch ticket?

I have a distinct feeling that I wouldn't find anything in California worth of value with a metal detector. Just a funny feeling.

But if you did (say in Newfoundland) it would be over interest.
