So I've been collecting guard for quite some time, now. I like the way they play, look & feel. But my love for Orks is finally going to bear some fruit, and I'm going to start an army. And it's going to be grots. Loads of them. I'm not expecting this to be too competitive, per se, but that's not so much the point. I have a mish mash of Guard/Inquisition/Assassins/Knights for tourney play. This is something I'm looking to do for fun, and for the chance to get my hands on to some fun slap dash scrap job type builds.

I've put together everything Grotty I know of at the moment to make a playable force, if nothing else, based around the glorious and ineffectual grots having a tiny lil' Warrrgh of their own.

++HQ++ (80pts)
Big Mek w/ Kustom Force Field & Da Dead Shiny Shoota
This obviously isn't a grot, but there's no grot HQ choices i know of! Maybe FW is hiding something? Regardless, I'm planning to model this as a Grot in something that looks like a tiny, orky Dreadknight. But less dumb.

++Elites++ (230pts)
Grot Tank Battle Mob:
3x Grot Tank w/ Grotzooka

Grot Tank Battle Mob:
3x Grot Tank w/ Grotzooka

++Troops++ (70pts)
10x Gretchin & Runtherd

10x Gretchin & Runtherd
These... are honestly just because I needed to have 2 troops in a CAD. I'd consider upping their numbers considerably by swapping out a Killa Kan, or if the points limit went above 1k. I'd love to have a swarm, but just don't fancy dropping much bigger dakka for it at 1k.

++Fast Attack++ (210pts)

Grot Mega Tank w/ 3x Big Shoota, 2x TL Big Shoota

Grot Mega Tank w/ 3x Big Shoota, 2x TL Big Shoota

++Heavy Support++ (330pts)

3x Killa Kan w/ Rokkit Launcha & Grot Riggers

5x Kannon w/ Extra Gretchin

2x Smasha Gun

++Fortification++ (75pts)

Vengeance Weapons Battery w/ Quad Icarus Lascannon
I have one to build; I can cover it in scaffolding and bitz and grubbins and grots. I may use a Flakk Gun I have lying around as a proxy for the Quad Icarus? Maybe.

Any grot based units I've forgotten about? Any suggesting for other units or vehicles I could make fit into the theme of things?

this looks REALLY fun have to say though, i would put more rokkits in the elites squads and let the heavy support with their mass of big shootas take care of the infantry because you will have to open up enemy vehicles first. I might also consider giving the big mek a KFF instead of Armor? and have him run as fast as he can in a unit of grots behind some vehicles to give them a 5+ as they move in?

also, what do the kans have?

i would keep the kans over adding more grots

The Kans are all Rokkit Launcha and Kan Klaw at the moment; Upgrading to rokkits is free for the Kans while it costs 10pts for the grot tanks, so it seemed like the better place to put them. (Editing the list to reflect that in a moment!) The Grot Tanks can take Kustom Mega-Blastas, if I need some more tankbusting stuff, for only 5 points more than Rokkits; maybe worth considering? The lack of melta/armourbane rules anywhere in the Ork dex is making me wonder how I'm going to get heavy AV in without using more than just Grots, not gonna lie! Gone are my days of having vanquisher cannons to rely on.

Maybe swap a few Kannons and/or a Bubblechuka out to get some Smasha guns? They are minimum S5, at least, with some good range. Zzap guns, too, maybe. (It does occur to me that the more I consider it, the more I'm considering a green painted Guard Gunline in my head...)

I was wondering about a Force Field on the 'Mek', but all my grot tanks come with an invun save by merit of Rolling Scrap Pile. Upgrading to a KFF would give 'em the same save against Ordanance and Destroyer weapons, of course, as well as offer some manner of protection for the poor buggers on foot and the Kans. He could maybe form a handy bubble shield for some of the Mek Gunz, to help soak those wounds that do get through the T7 gun and into the squishy grot crew.

Save the grot riggers. Those kans are going to mostly die outright, could be points better spent elsewhere. Also, what are your options for grotzookas on the tanx? Bubble chukkas are not as great as the Smasha, which is IMHO better than the Zzap gun (no gets got/gets supa hot rules, and ap1 for extra boom)

Looking at it again, I'm going to swap those Bubble chukkas for Smasha guns just to cover bases against mech lists, seems to plug a hole in my army better that way.

Grotzookas run my tanks 5 points higher on Grot tanks and Grot mega tanks than shootas do, but anywhere a shoota (TL or otherwise is) I can swap them out for 'zooks. I'f I'm dropping the Riggers on the cans, I can swap out all the grot tanks to Grotzookas- maybe commit to that force field Mek and give him a Dead Shiny Shoota with the 5 points left for ranged attacks?

Updating the list up top with those choices reflected for now, makes considering the revised force easier.

looks good, but, for the sake of fluff, when you up to 1500, you need to at least add another 80 or so grots

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Absolutely! They can make tarpits or walking shields all day every day, then. I only don't have that many now so I can try and bring some actual Dakka to the field

Once I have this lot built, task #2 will be grots, grots, grots. After that? More bug gunz. With additional grots.
