DA vs BT
His Emperor's Champion was on his own, and charged my DW knights, challenged the knight master. In the same assault phase, a unit of crusaders charged my knights from a different angle, all got within range of the combat without coming within 2" of the champion.

After 2 rounds of combat, the champion beats my knight, and consolidates in towards the other knights and what's left of the crusaders. At this point, there's a line of the 3 remaining knights, the remaining crusaders on one side of this line, and the champion on the other side of it. The champion is within 2" of the crusaders, but he's completely separated by 3 knights, who are all in btb.

In the setup I listed, with knights separating them, could he join their unit?

The reason I'm wondering is that we were unsure if I'd be able to put all of my attacks on the champion instead of the crusaders if they were still separate units. I had been saving smite mode for when the champion won the challenge. In the end we agreed they'd be separate, wanted to see what other interpretations for it were though.

No. You can only join in the movement phase if you're not in CC.
Spoiler:
An Independent Character cannot leave a unit while either he or the unit is in Reserves, locked in combat, Falling Back or has Gone to Ground. He cannot join a unit that is in Reserves, locked in combat or Falling Back.

Wow, didn't realize it was right under my nose this whole time. There are always so many sections of the rulebook that I forget because they're never used except for weird scenarios like this one
