Hey guys, I just picked up the core set and ran through the sample scenario a few times and once with the full ruleset. I had a couple of questions for those who have been playing, as I really, really enjoy the system from my brief experience so far.
1) The Core Set seems to come stock with fairly useful ships. Based on the price of the core set versus buying ships individually, it seems like buying a second set just to have more of those ships and a second set of game accessories would be a good idea long term. Is that correct?
2) Do players tend to collect both sides or focus on one or the other?
Thank you!

(1) Yep it is pretty commonly accepted that two core sets is a solid foundation. That said, keep in mind that the expansion versions of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter have different cards, including pilots you will want to own (especially Howlrunner).
(2) Both? There are three factions now. It is pretty common for players to collect all the stuff but spend more time playing one faction. There are a lot of cards that come with ships from one faction that are very good with ships from other factions. Otherwise, there is really no practical reason to do so (unless, like me, you host friendly games and let pals fly your ships against you).

Good, it is one of the more enjoyable quick pick-up games out there (assuming X-wing). 1) The Core Set seems to come stock with fairly useful ships. No and Yes, the additional ships will get you other pilot cards, you only really need one of each of Tie and X-wing. It is good value and just plain easier to get 2 sets of the core game (easier to find too) 2) Do players tend to collect both sides or focus on one or the other? Thank you!
Not for everyone but I got both, it is not the worst in cost. I was rather torn on picking sides especially since the PC game "Tie-fighter" made me an ace standard plain Tie-fighter pilot. You also guarantee if for some silly reason this game goes out of print you can always play it. They included pre-painted models, hugely detailed, great stands and counters, simple rules and cards for all the stats. Really not a bad game to invest a little money in. My two cents.
I was born in '69, the first movie came out in '77: I was 8 years old and saw it in the movie theatres, made a huge impression.
I still find it amazing that the franchise is still going strong after some 38-odd years.

Funny enough, my collection is based on this very scenario.

Thanks for the help, though i forgot to title my thread with X-Wing
The extra pilots and upgrade cards from the expansions are what I am waffling a bit on. I assumed that picking up some of these would happen regardless (Howlrunner does indeed look nasty!) but it seemed like the two TIE Fighters included would remain useful for some time.
I was thinking about fluffing up the Rebel force a bit to do just as you both said, play with a small group of friends. I know there's a local scene for X-Wing but I haven't engaged it yet. I primarily wanted to pick up some Imperial fighters as their aesthetic is what hooked me into anything Star Wars long ago. I definitely understand wanting the cross-faction upgrades.
The third faction can I assume is Scum & Villainy. I need to read into it a bit more.
Are games locked in as opposing factions or is it acceptable to play Rebel v Rebel for example?

No worries. This sub-forum is about 99% X-Wing at the moment. That might change when Armada comes out, however. (You can also post about Imperial Assault here.) Really? I think she's kinda cute. In all seriousness, Howlrunner's ability in X-Wing makes her very, very good for swarms of TIE Fighters, especially Academy Pilots. She's been a tremendously popular choice all the way back to when the game was first released. reiner wrote:The third faction can I assume is Scum & Villainy. I need to read into it a bit more.
Yes, it is due out this week. Besides getting three new ships (Aggressor, Star Viper, and M3-A Interceptor), S&V also have access to versions of four existing ships: Firespray, y-Wing, Z-95, and HWK-290. The S&V version of those cards comes with the "Most Wanted" pack that contains S&V painted versions of two Z-95s and a Y-Wing.

That makles sense. I was initially looking at a swarmy type army and it seems to be one of the popular ways to go. Howlrunner's ability seemed to jive with that. I get the impression so far that a single +/- really makes or breaks a check in this game.
Thanks again for the advice. I'm excited to expand out a fleet when I get a few extra duckets

Ducats go pretty far in X-Wing, which is good because it is very easy to spend money on this game. It just won't seem nearly as bad if you are used to GW.
There is not a lot of granularity to the numbers in X-Wing. A single red or green dice makes a lot of difference and same goes for hull and shield points. With upgrades and named pilot, a single point of cost can be make an okay card great or vice versa. IMO, each ship feels really different.
