Thought of this a while back after seeing similar things done on other forums, and figured the concept could easily be ported over to Dakka. The principle:

Each month there will be a painting challenge, with the theme voted on the month before by forum members, and the winner each month will also be decided by a community vote. There won't be any prizes beyond bragging rights, but it would be possible to set up a league table tracking overall points if it gets enough steam.

The themes could be very variable or more specific, for example, the first month could be themed 'Space Marine', and the next could be 'dramatic', encompassing any system or style.

So, would there be any interest in a monthly no-prize-involved painting challenge, open to any and all on the forum? Post any ideas or suggestions below, and if there's enough interest I'll see about setting something up for March.

I... actually don't know. Help?

Why not! I'd love it, as long as it won't require more expensive stuff. Count me in.

Yeah, no need to go and buy more stuff or anything. The whole point of this is that's is accessible for anyone, whether they be a 6-time Golden Demon winner or a newcomer with snap-fit SM. And I would also encourage voting based not just on quality but on effort, how much the entrant has progressed and whether they've pushed their limits further ect.

My main problem would be my pace. My start to finish time for a mini from sprue to shelf is often over a month. Parts are also a restriction, as I’d be unlikely to go out and buy bits for a competition.

But if the stars line up, and I’ve got the bits and the weather is good to prime, I might toss my hat into the the ring from time to time.

Ok, so that's 3 people interested. If we hit 5 (not including myself), I'll put up a poll for the first month's subject!

This is a good point. If enough people say so, the time could easily be extended, but one of the points of this type of thing is to be a little motivational. And you also don't have to start from sprue, the model could be built, primed, even basecoated so long as it's obvious from the proof picture that I'd ask for on entry. So long as we can see where you start and where you end up, anything goes!

The whole thing is meant to be completely informal, so no one feel that you have to meet strict criteria or change the way you do things; it's just an excuse for us all to get painting and maybe push ourselves a little further than normal! We're not going to punish anyone for not finishing or anything, you could even submit a mostly-fninshed piece if you can't completely finish off a mini. It's not likely to win perhaps, but there will be league points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place each month, so you could still rack up a few even with something only 90% done!

7.

Maybe I'll even, you know, finish some of the things I start painting.

Also I am for the no prize thing, actually getting something finished is prize enough to me tbh.

8. I'd be keen. My suggestion for the first theme is "veteran warrior"

Yeah, count me in, too

I'll be a little restricted in what I paint (being space marines or legion of chaos), but I should be able to work toward the monthly theme.

How about something simple to kick off? Basic troop, or infantry, or 'Duty'.
Something worded fairly vaguely that has a lot of possible angles, so more people can interpret it differently and get involved.

Where is the poll going? Here or another thread?

The poll is up here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/637234.page#7619864

As are the rules, which I've basically lifted from the One Ring forum's painting challenge. Short version: You can enter up for 4 minis as a single entry, have all month to paint them, and so long as you submit a Proof picture (of the model in the state it's in when you enter) you're eligible for voting.

While this would be nice. I only ever really get hobby time in on weekends. Weekdays/nights are very rare for me hobby wise.

Voted for Veteran, though we're trending towards space marine winning. Hell, it would be a good excuse for me to paint a space marine

I'd be interested in monthly painting challenges but the themes might throw me off a little. For example a theme like "Troop" or "Heroic" would be great to slot in painting my nids to and could give me motivation to get more done, the moment you go more specific to "space marine" or "ork" I then drop out entirely since its distracting from the army not motivating toward it, which would be counter intuitive for me.

Each month, I'll try and do a good mix of specific ones and more generic things. This month, there's only one specific one (Space Marine, just as so many people have them), and the rest are applicable to any game or army (Veteran, Advanced Technique and Guns). It's in the hand of the vote at the end of the day, but we'll be running these every month if it goes well, so eventually I'm sure something will come up that suits what you're working on.

I'm down, although I admit to utterly failing at painting so far this year. I don't think I've picked up a brush yet this year.

Between the local store campaign, being sick and the GW golden ticket giveaway, my grey pile of shame is just increasing instead.
