Hello all, new poster to Dakka forums, usually just a lurker.
Recently i started a new salamanders offshoot army and i have been struggling with color schemes that look appealing, compatible, etc. i just finished painting a rhino as a "test" because it was what i had at the time to paint and it seems a bit off.
If any of you out there have experience with color compatibility and the like and could help me out with figuring out the problem, please help.

Well What colors do you like or want? Take a gander at the color wheel You will generally want to go with complimentary colors for your two base coat or neutral colors like white or black, then you can use a contrasting color for the details like lenses and stuff. That would be easy mode. IIRC Sally has a more yellow green than the blue side so looks off with the blue center and then orange trim.

I initially wanted to go dark angels style green with flames, i thought the blue might look good as well. I honestly dont know how to use the color wheel.

Side by side helps each other, opposite side contrast. I think its just a case of too many colors that clash with each other. If i was to do that i would keep it simple. Green torso, legs and arms black, gold/bronze trim, and put flames on the leg and arms like Legion of the damned style. and red eyes

So the blue and green probably worked together until i added flames and orange. So most likely getting rid of the excessive flames would help.
Except Vulkan He'stan makes me think the blue and non-flame orange is what needs to go Automatically Appended Next Post: Desubot wrote:Side by side helps each other, opposite side contrast.

I like this. Thank you, i think i will go with something like this, and convert the blue to black and orange to bronze. I made the sergeants head white which would be a big contrast like the red on ultramarines sergeants i think

This online tool is pretty good for helping generate a color palette. I gave a shot at making one for a Dark Angels green with red and yellow for flames

Decide if you are using 1 color, 3 color (adjacent) , 3 color (triad), or tetrad (4 colors) then set with or without a complimentary color. It give you a range of colors to work with.
You can play around with it to try and get a nice palette for your scheme.
If you are just starting from scratch with no ideas I would suggest a monochromatic scheme with a complimentary color. Use the tool I posted and set it to monochrome with complimentary and roll the dot around to set the primary color. Then paint the majority of the marine in the primary color (or shades of it) , and then pick a few areas (I usually pick shoulder pads) to paint the complimentary color. The tool even has a randomizer so you can kind of just click until you find something you like.
