Hello all,

I recently talked a friend of mine into taking the wallet emptying leap into Warhammer 40k and he wants to build a Tau army. The problem is, i know little about Tau and he has no idea how to build an army. Normally i would do what i did for my army (buy what looks cool, then realize half your army is commanders you cant use) but he doesn't want to use that kind money and doesn't enjoy painting like i do.

So please, help me understand some ideas that could make a good 500 to 750 point Tau army list.

the other 10% are filled with named characters and vespisd.

What models you like the most?

I dont what what he likes to be honest, i myself like the look of broadsides, riptides, firewarriors, and fireblades

You gotta get a missile star.
My brother plays tau and it's dirty. He has placed in 3/3 tournaments.
You get 6 missile crisis i think m with marker drones. And a buffmander

Former two are hands down best units in Codex. Latter two are good for filling up Troops (Fireblade augments the troops by letting them fire an extra shot).

Buffmander is dirty to play against.

So i know he needs something like

maybe a 3X crisis suit squad (not sure about weapons, he can choose i guess) [66]?

perhaps a commander or shadowsun/farsight some Hq

im thinking a riptide is too much for us right now. (i dont want to fight that in a 500v500 fight)

I'm a blood angels player so i hate tau and i can only give an idea of buffmander:
Commander crisis suit. 2+4++5+++, t5 3w split fire (awesome with the marker drones) tank hunter, rerolls to hit i think.

He stands in front and tanks wounds unless it's an instant kill you lookout sir. If you fail look out sir you hope you pass 4++.

He makes the whole squad better with his buffs.

You can run tau Empire with farsight ally.
Take 2 squads of kroot for you troop. Out flank is nice for objectives. They're cheap.

Yeah Riptide is a bit much. But in larger games your friend will want at least one.

Buffmanders attach themselves to units and have all sorts of Signature Systems that gives the unit it is attached to Ignore Cover, Monster Hunter, TL the works. Again, a bit much at 500 pts (it's actually a huge points sink at this level).

You're friend will want some Markerlights. Either Pathfinders or Marker Drones with a Commander attached w/ Drone Controller. At this points level you'll probably want the cheaper pathfinders .

For 500 I would probably run something like this:

Cadre Fireblade
10x Warriors w/ Pulse Rifles
12x Kroot w/ Sniper Rounds
5x Pathfinders
5x Pathfinders
1x Crisis Suit w/ 2x Missile Pods
1x Crisis Suit w/ 2x Missile Pods
1x Crisis Suit w/ 2x Fusion Blasters

That's 500 on the dot and should give your friend an idea on how they want to run their Tau (Gunline comes from Fireblade and Warriors, Mobile from Crisis Suits and Kroot).
