So what's everyone's experience with crackle paint? Primarily as it relates to basing?
I tried out a demo last night and the paint sort of wrinkled but didn't really crack the way I wanted it. For reference, here's the video that inspired me: How to create a cracked desert base. I want to base my Orks on a surface that looks like Death Valley, so something like this:
Is there a reliable way of achieving this effect or is it just luck of the draw when it comes to your crack pattern/depth of the cracks?

The thicker your crackle medium the bigger the cracks. Put a layer of brown down, then apply your desert/crackle medium then drybrush. Agrellan earth from gw is a good buy

Argellian earth I can confirm is good, used with a very light touch and tiny amounts right can make quite effective dust.

So if I want more tiny cracks on the base I should apply a thinner layer of crackle?

Yeah, thickness is everything. Takes some getting used too to get exactly the right cracks, practice on somthing first I'd advise.

I'll have a few goes on a plastic disposable plate before I waste any bases on it.

Watch the GW video on this to see how much to slop on it is quite a bit to get the nice, big. cracks.
I like Agrellan Earth better than crackle paints I've tried.
