I was sitting around the other day re-reading some novels featuring the PDF in them whether they turn traitor or not or fail and I thought to myself "all these PDF troops are not trained that well, to be honest they don't have the best equipment either" - that got me thinking about the vehicles used in PDF regiments and thought that normal PDF regiments, many though given Leman Russes, may not have access to this stuf and may just have old vehicles or even home made tanks of various designs. I decided to try out making some vehicles for the PDF regiment of my made up planet (Surov) as to what I imagine they are normally equipped with (aside from Chimera and Leman Russ variants) and came up with the following vehicles based on Soviet 1/48 models I had lying around. These are just the ones I have tried out and would like to know if you guys agree, disagree or have come up with your own home made vehicles. note I will add some artwork to what the vehicles I based them off underneath the descriptions

PDF Heavy Tank - The Heavy Tank is the most common tank in the Surov PDF, they are very slow but heavily armoured packing a moderate punch from their main gun. Easily capable of shrugging off heavy anti tank weaponry as they blunder across the battlefield. Unfortunately the main engine of these tanks are mechanically unreliable and often the tanks will breakdown in the middle of the battlefield, making them sitting targets for the enemy, they also have an underpowered main cannon which though good against heavy and medium vehicles is near to useless against other tanks. A few of the tanks have had an upgraded turret to incorporate a Leman Russes Battle Cannon or a local variant however these turrets are large and give a tall silhouette to the tank (Model used was a KV-1)

pts = 90

Type: Tank

BS Front Side Rear HP
2 13 11 11 3

Weapons: Light Battle Cannon, Hull Mounted Heavy Stubber, Rear Mounted Heavy Stubber (on Turret)

Special Rules: Unreliable - if moving the Tank roll a D6, if a 1 is rolled it has become immobile as to the damage result on the table (though does not lose any hull points) also the Tank may never move faster then 6" but can move and fire it's Light Battle Cannon

Upgrades: Usual Astra Militarum Upgrades, for 25pts may exchange it's turret weapons for a Battle Cannon

PDF Medium Tank - The Medium Tank of the PDF of Surov is a fast number, using the same engine found in the heavy tank but in a lighter tank these are designed to punch through gaps in enemy lines made by the heavy tanks and attack the enemy supply lines. Many of these have been upgraded to have lascannons in there turrets to fight other enemy tanks but the majority are still armed with the same light battle cannon found on the heavy tank. These are to attack lighter targets and infantry while the lascannon models protect them from roving armour. Unfortunately the engines are still unreliable but due to the lighter tanks they are more likely to still work unless pushed too hard. (have 2 T-34/76's and a T-3
4/85)

pts = 60

BS Front Side Rear HP
2 12 11 10 3

Type: Tank

Squadron: 1-3 Medium Tanks may be taken in a squadron

Weapons: Light Battle Cannon, Heavy Stubber

Special Rules: Unreliable - when moving more then 6" roll a D6, on a 1 the tank may only move 6" for the rest of the battle

Tank riders - a unit of 10 PDF troopers may ride on the back of a Medium Tank as if it was an open topped vehicle. If the tank is hit while carrying trooper the unit takes D6 hits at halve the attacking weapons strength (bit dangerous riding on the back of a tank)

Upgrades: Usual Astra Militarum upgrades for vehicles, any tank may upgrade it's light battle cannon for a Lascannon for +20 points

Old Light Tank

The Light Tank was a complete disaster for the PDF regiments of Surov. They were a first attempt of making a fighting tank that could carry enough firepower to protect the infantry at a reduced cost. Unfortunately after Dark Eldar raiders attacked it showed these light tanks were a massive laugh to the enemies of man and after the Dark Angels defeated the raiders these tanks were taken out of production - even though over 10,000 were made for the PDF. After consideration (and refusing to repay the Administrations pockets) the leaders of Surov decided to operate the light tanks as pushechnoye myaso or Cannon fodder (I REALLY hope that is the right russian phrase and really sorry if it isn't) their simple task to draw away enemy armour so the heavier weapons can take them out. They will also be used to attack enemy defense positions revealing their positions. Because of the nature of these tactics only penal legionnaires crew these tanks. This may seem foolish giving a criminal a tank until you notice the demo charge under the tank, to explode under a command from a nearby commissar or officer. The crew have been known to ram enemy vehicles and buildings with the tanks, making the demo charges explode and obliterating the tanks and the targets. The crews don't care, they don't have much to live for anyway.
(had 5 T-26's lying around and decided to use them like this)

pts = 35pts

Type: Tank, Fast

BS Front Side Rear HP
2 11 10 10 2

Squadron: 1-5 old light tanks

Weapons: Autocannon, Pintle Mounted Heavy Stubber, Demo Charge

Special Rules: sentenced to die - The Old Light Tank may choose to explode it's demo charge if it rams into an enemy vehicle. Make the ram attack as normal then remove the light tank as a casualty and treat the exploding demo charge as if the enemy vehicle had been hit by a strength 10 ordnance weapon on the facing armour it was rammed on.

I know but I put them at that cost to show the rarity in the PDF regiment of the home world which used massed infantry rushes over armour. If you wanna use these yourself take 20points off the medium and the heavy :-)

Sounds about right, and a lascannon is not worth 50 pts either. Could make it 20 if you want to make it seems like its rare.

To give you an idea, the Heavy tank was more expensive than a LR with far, far, far worse weapons and worse armor, and a lascannon is a 10 pts upgrade going from a mortar.

How do they look next to other GW tanks? Tell me about your PDF! This sounds interesting!

Is it a playable army? I'm intrigued...

Reminds me of a Greek guy who's making awesome conversions for both 40k and fantasy. One of his armies are soviet dwarves!

my PDF army was designed using house rules for a campaign I played at a local gaming club :-) I used the normal Astra Militarium codex with the exception that the infantry platoon was modified to having nothing but conscripts. The Tanks I have are basically 1/48 scale models I had left over from a collection :-) (was wanting to do a diorama of a Russian tank unit in 1942 until my mother bought me a T-34/85 lol)

Kavik_Whitescar I am happy for you to use these house rules in a friendly game or a house ruled campaign if you want to :-)

I do intend to one day restart my Surov PDF Guard force but it will be a while before I get started :-) when I do I may try out a PDF Codex :-)
