So I don't know if any of you are playing this game, but I am one of the questions I have is how do you get dwarves to burn wood? Because I need to start up my metal industry and I am stuck as I am trying to get this possessed guy metals and bars. I already had a dwarf go crazy and start killing people, but failed miserably and died from a badger and then one of my mechanics got attacked by a parrot.

I love this game but I don't know how to get all the things to help me. I mean I have a legendary cook that I think is possessed (But isn't) and started cooking like no other ever since and has made 500 meals by himself.

If anyone can hlep me with the wood burning situation that would be good.

Ihave countless stories to tell though as I have played this game for around 16 hours.

IF you have never heard of Dwarf Fortress.... Then the best idea for a description for this game is heavily flawed, but basically minecraft if it gave you god like powers and ability to control everything from a 2d perspective in a 3d space.

There is not this idea.

To burn wood you need a wood furnace. It's found alongside the smelter and glass furnace and whatnot. And you need a dwarf assigned to wood burning, which is found under farming/related in the professions list.

If you need the key commands, it would go press "b", then "e", then "w".

Oh well none of my guys have wood burning... Out of the 44 dwarves I Have. I have six wood furnances just no one to operate them. though funnily enough I have six smelters but no wood burners. Ugh I hope to god there is a way to give myself a dwarf with woodburning.....

They don't need to actually have the skill to build it, they just need to have the profession assigned to them. Dwarves can be assigned to any task, regardless of whether they have the skill or not. They just won't be as good at it.

So you would go to an individual dwarf and go to the labor menu, and assign the skill from there.

I hope I'm understanding the issue right.

Possessed dwarves build the funniest things.

The whole game is ridiculous, which makes it brilliant.

I have a ghost and I have no idea how to place a memorialized slab to a certain dwarf that died a very violent death, after he went beserk.

Also funny thing so far I have a legendary cook who has not only made the greatest meals that last for literally months at a time. But I think he will make an artifact food

I love this game so far. I will probably write up a report on it.

I prefer the vast amount of mods!

Here's some good ones I like.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=110704.0
Rise of the Mushroom kingdom: Interesting lore, and a vast amount of neat stuff

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=109846.0
Deon created mods are very good and unique while keeping to having interesting stuff that usually you'd never see in normal DF.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=122578.0

Fallout mod, another Deon based mod but it's pretty cool.

Might want to keep the Wiki handy, quite a bit can't be seen ingame due to the vast amount of stuff.

That and the horrific Dwarf Fortress UI which he never seems to want to update.

The first three rules of Dwarf Fortress are.

1. Get a alcohol production system going.
2. Get a military infrastructure going.
3. Get a good sized cemetery ready.

Are you using a graphics pack? I have a hard time with ASCII personally.

As for the game:

Don't use Hunters. Ever.

Other then that welshhoppo pretty much nailed it

Also, use the Dwarf Therapist utility if you can, its a lifesaver once your population reaches 30 and up.

And read Boatmurdered

Thats all I am using too

I don't have a single hunter, a bunch of gathers, farmers, fishers, and a bunch of brewers. Infact I have a legendary brewer that makes so much wine, alongside my cook they basically are the two most gifted individuals so far, I have a legendary carpenter, a legendary mason, a legendary miner, and a legendary mechanic.

I attacked a dwarf carvaran for no reason at all, and I lost 4 dwarves to one of their guards, but I killed all of the carvaran and stole all their items, So I basically got all my items back that I sold to them. (Well half of them escaped) one of them called me a child and it kind of pissed me off. And there are no other threats nearby and my people are self sustaining now.

I find the ASCII quite interesting and it makes the game quirky.

I also find that my hunters do tend to come back with something, and they are my first line of defence (bait) against gobbos and beasties.

Try the Lazy Newb Pack to fix your graphical and utility needs, its what I use (with the Obsidian Soul graphics).
And as far as jacking caravans, you can always just deconstruct the Trade Depot after traders unload their goods. Same thing as siezing the goods without the peril.

that is definately an exploit but I will do that XD

I already have a texture pack, and yeah I lost 4 dwarves from my recruits. (My recruits died, but both of my commanders kicked the ass of the guards)

Sweet.

I tried to run a Dakka succession game 2 years ago. Didn't make it past 3 or 4 years. Wouldn't mind taking another stab at it sometime.

I am past year 2. I've lost 6 dwarves so far.

I have found out I need constant food supply and have almost run out of food a few times, plus having a legendary cook also helps as well as a legendary carpenter (Who is also my militia commander) constantly working. While my main military guys just defend the stockpiles outside of my fortress( Which are constantly raided by kobolds, but its wood... And I am in a forest so I have constant supply of wood and elephants to kill

So far I have found legendary beast and immediately walled it up. I have also been trying to give my mayor good quarters....

Be wary it is extremely complicated.

Get a texture pack.

Get dwarf therapist.

Those are the two you really need in order for your game to be the best experience possible.

It has alot of depth and you can get lost for days in it.

Make either Easy or Good meals if you keep running out of food. Lavish meals use 4 ingredients, whereas the others use less. Also, you should be growing a ton of plump helmets. That can be cooked, brewed, and eaten raw, making them the centerfold of your Dorf Food Porn Magazine.

I ran out of them! so I don't have anymore, I don't know how but I ran out :(

Should I disable cook and brew for plump helmets and just let guys eat raw?

Because I have a ton of other seeds but no one is making them.....

Check out the farming tutorial on the wiki for help on the other seeds, but for the most part I don't cook plump helmets. Brewing and eating raw are the way to go.

Yeah, don't cook those plump helmets.

When you cook a plant, you destroy the seeds and so you can't cook anymore. You do get the seeds when you brew them. So make sure that you are brewing every plant you can, but don't cook the plump helmets, because only bad things will happen.

I just set it up so that my plumps are only eaten raw or brewed.

Yeah I have a legendary cook who has cooked so many good meals that they last for weeks.

And yeah I just deconstruct my depot while the elves were trading because I really hated them and I got all their items.... (it was fantastic.)

Just keep in mind that if you actually trade with the elves, dont offer them anything wooden or stored in wooden bin there will be much butthurt. Other then animals and seeds theres nothing to gain from them.

The animals can be pretty nice, though. Tame giant jaguars? Yes. And they can offer yarn, which is the one strange mood material I always forget to have on hand.

Yeah i just deconstructed one of my depots with my human carvaran that arrived and I took everything they had, including a ton of meat and a bunch of cloth and leather, which I need desperately.

I have a dwarf currently on a strange mood that is demanding cloth and leather.

He's a weaver but I have nothing to give him.

And he jsut started attacking my dwarves that were in a training exercise. All of them just pulled out their weapons and beat the ccrap out of him..... The carvaran left all their supplies behind and I am currently on overdrive for beer making and steel making.
