I played, or at least attempted to play, a while ago. I might try again. It's so hard to know what the flying feth is a happening.

It is. I hate it.

I wish there was more you could do to help with knowing what the hell is going on.

The thing needs a serious UI and graphical upgrade. The difficulty of the actual game is fine, but the player needs to be easialy able to find the information and stuff they need.

They did upgrade it.

It's called Minecraft.

I do agree, the game is a right pain in the butt to use. But you get used to it eventually, I find it quite informative.

Game isn't really that complex when you get down to it, main issue is that your battling the games UI mostly in order to actually accomplish anything.

Toady has blatantly stated he won't be upgrading the graphics. ASCII is the best to see each individual item and person, but its a pain to learn to read.

As far as figuring out whats going on, I tend to pause every few minutes and check (a)nnouncements and (r)eports (difference being reports is for combat, announcements is for everything else)

There is not this idea.

I'm wondering right now if giant cave spiders aren't as terrifying as they used to be. One of my miners happened on one, and killed it by punching it to death. He was only mildly bruised in return.

Well Mining does train up dwarf strength, legendary miners make the best of soldiers.

So do wood cutters.

My wood cutters is my milita commander, and the Captain of the Guard was a former Potter. My militia commander has more kills than anyone and is a Lesbian, I nicknamed her dragonbeater because she faced a giant and killed it. After a dwarf wrestled it to a stand still.

Yeah, mining and screw pump operating is my form of boot camp, until I can master the "dwarven day care". Haven't had much success.

In other news I tried reclaiming a ruin from world gen, the layout gave me nausea. But there was a ton of loot there, my starting 7 could have survived there indefinitely. Might give it another go after work

True, but this was in a brand new fort. He's a proficient miner, but not very strong, and had no armor. The spider just missed him, over and over, and then he punched it til it burst. As you can see here:

Spoiler:

Just an odd moment, really. I've lost squads of well armed dwarves to GCS attacks in the past, and then there's this little guy.

Might have been luck.

DFWiki wrote:Giant cave spiders are not a rarity with dozens present in the underground caverns, deep below the surface. They can be extremely hard to kill. On occasion, however, a lucky dwarf might pound one to death within a few attacks by punching its skull into its brain, which can be a godsend after an unfortunate cavern breaching exercise.

I found the best way to train soldiers is to make them stand in an area with loads of wooden traps, and then get one of my dwarfs to repeatedly activate them.

It doesn't bare well for any children they happen to be carrying though.

Must have been. Well, it's not the kind of luck I'm going to complain about.

My preferred training method is to fill a safe room with various caged beasts, station my militia in there, and pull the lever. Or better yet, caged goblins. Only training through glorious combat is acceptable.

(Note that I did not say it is the best method.)

Yeah I have 29 dwarves that aren't doing anything, they are all miners. And they aren't unhappy. They are just standing around twindling their thumbs

Because of the fact that I have DADD (Dorf Attention Deficit Disorder), I have yet to fully play out a fortress on the new version of the game. To help motivate myself, I'm gonna gen a new world and do a let's play-esque blog.

Now do I want to start a fort from scratch, or do I want to reclaim one of the 17 ruins (for the new folks reclaiming a world-genned ruin is a new feature, and something I only did once for 5 seconds)?

I'm open to suggestions, ideas, and people wanting to be dwarfed, as I will put up the blog link once its going, we can get a community vibe going here

For a blod I'd start from scratch. So as not to confuse newer players.

Yeah, I just looked into all the ruins. ALL of them were ended by forgotten beasts, and since whatever killed a fort tends to camp out there, I'll be running into the wilds...

A goblin? Dang. In my forts I tend to reward all my artifact crafters. Good artifacts that max out useful skills (smithing, masonry, etc) get swanky tombs and upgraded rooms. The not so useful ones (pretty much anything wooden) are rewarded with the chance to serve the fortress in our glorious spartan squads. And by spartan I mean they get a spear, helmet, and cloak. Then they train until the first threat pops up, and they are the first in and the last out. If one survives long enough then he will get real armor and inducted into a real squad.

I am going to mass militarize my place.

I already have 36 dwarves in the military out of the 127 dwarves at my fort. I wish I got attacked more often. :/

Wait....

I could kill the human carvaran. START A WAR WITH THE HUMANS!

Had a accident during a training session the earlier. My milita commander was dodging spikes, but dodged the wrong way and took ten wooden spikes to the face and died.

Well, upon seeing how awesome spikes were at instakilling my dwarves, I decided to line the entrance to my base with them and I turned the barracks into a massive civilian bunker, so when I call an alert they'll all hide in there. Then I pull the lever at the back and the entire floor of my base erupts in spikes.

I've never been able to kill ANYTHING with spikes. I have no clue why, maybe I have some weird wannabe jedi goblins or something. They always juke the spike and weapon traps, just to run into the cages.

I think the quality of the mechanism used in the trap affects its chance of hitting something. Not sure if that's the case, or if it's true in your case.
