I think the quality of the mechanism used in the trap affects its chance of hitting something. Not sure if that's the case, or if it's true in your case.

Have you tried drafting them, positioning them under a raised drawbridge, and then dropping it?

Lately I've been trying to get an old challenge I used to do working. Basically, you've got to set up the world so that it will generate some regions with extremely high temperatures. So high that anything on the surface will burst into flame, but not so high that it happens immediately. Then the trick is to get a few dwarfs underground, and try to have them survive in that environment.

It used to be a lot more difficult way back in the day, before the addition of cavern layers. No sources of wood or water, ever. I managed to keep a fort of about twenty going with two barrels.

I finally had my dwarves cause a rebellion. Dragon Fister and her men fought for days against the goblin menance. Where half the army fought against a forgotten beast.

Eh, why not. Give me a farmer, no gender preference.

In my own game, I've been trying to find the most fun structure to embark on. Caves and lairs are generally pretty dull, Roc nests are interesting if you can get the eggs, labyrinths are usually in soil and don't look like much... Maybe I'll use the embark anywhere hack and try an abandoned dark fortress.

My favorite item in any of y DF games so far was a Garnet toy Boat. It menaced with spikes made of Garnet. What did the smart ass dwarf name it? The Comedic Price.

I'll probably have from embark through the first year up tonight assuming my internet decides to cooperate. There is a lack of militarization in my fort, but I'll make sure to throw you in when I squad up. which I should really get to because I embarked less then 10 tiles from a necro tower...

OK, year one is up, as well as embark. I didn't dwarf anyone, I probably will this year when I can make an actual military.

Also, I did some research into the necro tower next to me (I'll put it in the blog as part of a legends post or something later). Its called Trammelweather, and it is the ONLY one in the world. It was founded by a human in the year 30. Since then, it has grown to 6 dwarves, 5 humans, and 2 elves, and a few dozen undead. All they do is write books, one every other year or so for 500 years. Other then that nothing. No kills. Just books. It's like the library, but you can't check out. Weak

I have yet to find any bloody books.

My dwarves made alot of history though and the dragon fister was known to of fought an ogre by herself and lived.

So far I've just been letting it run in the background nowadays

As bad as my fortress mode skills are, they are amazing compared to my ability to play adventure mode. I've never managed to explore a tower as an adventurer. Or get to one...

Use dwarf therapist. And you can find people who are good at fighting or somewhat decent and have them train all the time. Once you have a dedicated military group you can keep expanding it. Especially in higher difficulties.

currently out of the 189 dwarves in my army at least 60 of them are serving in the military.

I use dwarf therapist heavily . I was talking about finding books and slabs in the necro towers, which can only be done in adventure mode

I don't know how anyone can play the damn game without Dwarf Therapist.

It's not that hard, really. The only utility I've ever used was dfhack, for the emnbark anywhere option.
