So long story short I bought 2 boxes of sternguard to use as DA vet squad. Then 30 sec ago I was reading the entry for the DA veterans and in order for the sergeant to have a power sword he has to replace his boltgun. I modeled him with a combi-melts and a power sword. But for him to have the combi-melta he has to also replace his boltgun. So he can't have both.
Now question is can a sternguard sergeant have both power sword and combi-melta?

If it says you may replace your boltgun with one of the following why would you think you could replace it with two of the following?

Mr Shine wasn't being deliberately obtuse. He could have just given you a yes or no, but you wouldn't have known why.

Partially, but more I was simply emphasising the relevant part of the rules to provide the answer

Uh. Did you guys actually read the question?
A STERNGUARD Sergeant can have a combi-weapon and a Power Sword, yes. You can replace the bolter with the combi-weapon and you can replace the bolt pistol with a power sword.
He wasn't asking about what he could do with his Dark Angel sergeant.

Oh, my mistake. Well that's a different matter entirely. That's very clearly spelled out in the Sternguard entry in Codex: Space Marines.

thank you man!! I thought I could do the same with my DA sergeant but was wrong. I guess now decision time. Play them as sternguard with an allied detachment or just have a veteran with out the combi weapon or power sword.

Besides the looks, there is absolutely no reason to give a Sternguard sergeant a power sword if he has a combi-weapon. Lightning claw costs the same and is just simply better.

never thought about that to be honest and your right!. but it's also mostly looks. He looks awesome resting his and on the sword.

For that, I'd suggest listing it as a Lightning claw. Just make sure your opponent knows before hand and is okay with it. If they kick up a fuss because "WYSIWYG > Rule of Cool", then play it as a sword for that match.
Of course, in a tourny scene, it's more than likely you'd have to run it as a sword. From what I hear they're pretty strict on WYSIWYG.

You're talking about this particular sword bit, right?
(Yay excuses to post photos of my miniatures!)
Luckily it's in the sheath, meaning you could easily claim it's simply some regular Sword being carried as a sign of veteran leadership status, and for all intents and purposes has no gameplay value. Fun thing about WYSIWIG is it's easy to get away with Rule of Cool. Anyone who'd flip their lid at it, just be like "I modeled it on there so you could easily tell who the Sgt. was."

yeah that's a good idea to. But I think think I'm just going to give him a pistol. I like to have an ap3 weapon on my sergeants so they can at least kill something. Lol
