Hey guys. I recently took the plunge and got my first army (Tyranid) and decided on hive fleet leviathan. I like the pale flesh contrasting to the purple. I'm painting a few models in differnt styles. I tried washing the entire model after the base coat, and washing after the layer on the flesh with a detail brush. I think that washing the entire model wasn't the best, as I had to touch up the wash in a few instances anyway, and the washing over the layer ended up giving me a nice controlled look. I'm also considering trying to not wash the Naggaroth Night on the carapace and instead go for a ligher, more striking carapace. I've seen a couple of pics of this and it looks pretty cool.

Here are the colours I used

Rakarth Flesh: Base coat on the Skin
Screaming Skull: Layer on the Skin
Pallid Wych Flesh: Accent on the Skin. I use this around the jaw and the hip to add a little pop
Carroburg Crimson: Wash for the exposed muscle
Naggaroth Night: Base coat for the carapace
Nuln Oil: Wash for the Carapace
Xerius purple: Feathering on the carapace
Genestealer Purple: Feathering on the carapace.
Abbadon Black: Base on the rending claws/hooves, etc.
Khorne Red: Base on the red portions of the Talons, hooves
Evil Sunz Scarlet: Highlight for the red.
Wild Rider REd: fine detail around the end of the talons.
Warpstone Glow: Base for the eyes
Moot Green: Layer for the eyes.
Ubshanti Bone : Base for the teeth
Agrax Earthshade: wash for the teath
Scar White : layer on the teeth.

I need a finer brush because my brush control just isn't the best yet, and I thought I could coast on a size 0 brush.

Anyway, here are the pictures; Don't be gentle, I really want my minis to look great, and I can take criticism

Here's the album:

Thanks, and looking forward to reading your criticism

I think the biggest change you need to make is switching to a white undercoat. It'll make all your white flesh a million times cleaner. Otherwise you just need to practice. Watch lots of tutorials on YouTube

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Just prime in white, then shade on the colors. This is Leviathan if I recall correctly.

I like it a lot. I personally refuse to prime any model in anything other than black for no real good reason other than that's how I've always done it.

I like the way the model came out with your technique though. One thing though, is the red supposed to be blood on the claws? Blood on a model like it's been killing things is actually a difficult technique to get right and so I'd skip that part of it until you get the rest of the painting down pat.

It's not supposed to be blood, just a red/black pattern on the boney bits. I personally think all red scything talons/hooves looks a little silly, and I've seen a lot of people use a two tone black red that looked pretty good.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Why not base coat the model black? What does it do for the skin tone that multiple thin layers couldn't do?

They look great from the photos, you just need a little more practice and they will start to look even better. You should definitely check out some tutorials because they can really help with getting the techniques down.
