Hey I've recently started being interested in building an Imperial Guard army and playing WH40k

However. Before I purchase any units at all I was wondering if anyone could help me out in answering a few questions and/or helping me in building a fairly
decent but starter 1000 point army.

I've looked up some other 1000 starter armies but all of the extra text confuses me (as simple minded as I am).
For e.g. it will say things like

HQ- Veterans with heavy bolter,flamer,2x etc...

Now I realize that refers to the weapons and squad type, but it would help a ton if anybody familiar with IG could possibly start from the top up
and give me a very basic run down of the actual troops I need to purchase as a whole, and then finally go into what weapons and extras will be added to meet the
1000 point mark.

Any help will be high highly! appreciated.

Drop the heavy bolter and swap it with an autocannon or a lascannon. The autocannon costs the same and, although you lose one shot, you win 2+ strength and that is far more useful when going against light vehichles (like wave serpents) and negating the FNP+ of T3 mooks. PLus you will wound more easily. The lascannon has a big range (meaning you can camp the CCS safely) and is really useful for one shooting enemy commanders with T4 (like space marine captains or chaos lords).

idk much about IG, but my mate is starting it, he bought a cadian defence force
Also a good tip for starting off is to use battlescribe, its an army list creator and is probs the best one out, it might be more easier to understand and organize ur stuff on there, idk it helps me with everything

Take a look at the GW website to see what models you like the look of, and what boxes are out there. Some offer a £50 saving in buying individually

I would not recommend casting yourself, this is illegal in so many ways. And people wonder and rumour why GW is meant to be in trouble...

Also, unfortunately Pask does not make tanks scoring. But I would still recommend you take a look at the rules for tank commanders for your HQ

Guardsman: "Sir, we appear to have brought knives to a gunfight"

BANG!!!

Commissar: "Anymore questions?"

Correction. Pask does not do what i thought he did. I read so many ig list with him as warlord and just thought he was the one with the special rule.

Casting is not illegal. Selling imitation is illegal. Also imitation is not allowed at tournament but riddle me this. If you made a model from scratch and its a unique conversion like a special Daemon Prince unique and doesnt use any of the sprues from gw but maybe a few from a better cheaper company such as infinity works then how is that illegal? GW models are not competitive and are often faked by chinese.

Hell i just saw some one use a World Of warcraft figurine of Lilith the Succubus as a Daemon Princess and just green stuffed the lower torso to be a serpent tail with scales. 0% gw finecast piece of crap.

Also i suggest proxy an army of papercraft tanks and planes before you buy.

I agree on the casting thing. If you make your own, and youre not selling them (ie making money GW wouldn't) then you are in the clear.

Casting takes away the money you would have spent on the hobby...

Downloading movies, music and books from a torrent sharing website is illegal even though you don't pay for them...

If the idea of tank armies interests you I can suggest looking at the Imperial Armour 1 2nd edition for ideas. It lets you take tanks as troops

Back to the original post. The type of troops you will need will depend a lot on the style of army you want; mechanised, blob, aerial and armoured seem to be the main options

Which would you think would stand out for you, itwould then be easier for us to help with the units that fit into each army style

Guardsman: "Sir, we appear to have brought knives to a gunfight"

I agree with Filch's "papercraft" Suggestion. You just need the Codex and pieces of paper to note the locations of units, and an opponent to play you. (it would be beneficial to have at least one tank and one guardsman so you can place on the corresponding paper placeholder if you need to check line of sight).

When you do start getting models, buy used when you can. Any time the difference between two units is just a piece that slides in (like the Leman Russ varients) DO NOT glue the piece in. That way you can field it as any of the variants you have the pieces for. If you're concerned with losing pieces, keep the extra barrels in a plastic bag or one of those plastic containers Tang comes in.
