So here's the question, if I have a unit that charges another unit already locked in combat and I charge through terrain. Do my models strike at I1 or normal initiative if they do NOT have assault grenades?

I looked all over the assault section and could not find the answer.

I did however find this in multiple combat:

If a unit charges into a multiple combat in which all the enemy units are locked in combat from a previous turn, the Initiative penalty for charging through difficult terrain does not apply. In this case the enemy warriors are not set to receive the charge, and the unit charging through difficult terrain fights at its normal Initiative.

This rule requires you charge into a multiple combat, however the situation I'm talking about is not a multiple combat but one with just 1 of my units vs 1 of my opponents. So the question remains, am I reduced to I1 if I charge through terrain into an ongoing combat between 2 units (1 of which is mine).

I need a page number, the section its under and the rule itself.
I'm unable to find it and the above rule does not apply to the situation I'm talking about.

You become Multiple combat when you have your 2nd unit charge in making a 2 on 1

This can actually be read two ways:

- If a unit charges into a multiple combat [that is already in progress]...
or
- If a unit charges into a multiple combat [situation]

For example, if I run up to someone in a bar and whallop them, I can be said to have charged into a fight, even though there was no fight before I got there. Just one of the pecularities of this wonderfully imprecise language of ours.

And since that second interpretation is the one that makes the most sense in this context, particularly given the reasoning in the subsequent sentence, I would go with that one. In which case the penalty does not apply.

I see the wording issue you're pointing out. The phrasing could be read to imply that it must ALREADY be a Multiple Combat before your second unit gets there.

The phrasing is a little awkward, but based on the first paragraph under Multiple Combats on page 54, it appears that GW refers to it as a Multiple Combat as soon as you declare the charge from another unit into an ongoing assault.

"These occur when one unit charges two or more enemy units, or when a unit charges into an ongoing combat."

So the section you've quoted from page 55 does apply, because as soon as your new unit charges in there, it's now a Multiple Combat. It didn't have to be one BEFORE they got there.

At least that's how I read it, and is consistent with how I've seen it played in the last few editions.
