Subject: Cheap options to make still water

Was keen to make a pond but wanted to know what the best material was to use to make still water. Had heard that you could use straight PVA but that it goes yellow pretty quickly and fails.
Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

It depends on how deep you are looking to go.
For anything up to about 1/2", Woodland Scenics Realistic Water is probably your best bet.
If you need to replicate deep water, you'll probably want to look into using a two-part epoxy.

Had seen that but the price tag looks pretty steep and so was wondering if there was anything cheaper out there (have often found that the branded stuff can be almost replicated with cheaper options).

I use clear caulking, it take a but to dry but looks good. Smear it on with a Popsicle stick.
Something like this:

Ive also seen kits of two part resins for floral decorations at the local craft store, for about 6$ USD.

Was going to use caulking for the choppy sections, is there any way of making sure that it is flat nice it goes down? Would have thought that it would be hard to do with a paddle pop stick as you would get streaks. Is there anything that you could add to it make it flow to fill out he required space?

I haven't met a clear caulk that wasn't cloudy.
How big is your pond going to be? If it's a small pond a cheap option might just be to buy a small bottle of water effects like what Secret Weapon sells....

$5 for 15ml is expensive when you think of the price per ml, but it should be enough to do a small pond.

There is nothing cheaper than $10 that I can think of, and if your going to spend $10 you might as well buy a small bottle of water effects, or clear resin.

I think that's the same as the "Craft Smart Glass Coat" I listed earlier (especially since they both advertise "equivalent to 50 coats of varnish").

'Clear' caulk is cloudy/milky. That's what "clear" means, in context. You need 'crystal clear' caulk for it to actually appear what a normal person would call "clear." One of those medium-specific terms that flies in the face of common sense, but it is what it is. Luckily, the internet means we don't all have to learn the hard way. Just some of us...

Maybe that's an American thing because I've never noticed "crystal clear" caulk in DIY shops out here. Is it a silicone caulk?
