Hi guys.

As I ordered a gaming mat "Inferno Theme", I had no choice but to paint lava bases for my big fig. This is my first attempt, so far so good...

Nice first attempt! I'm not sure how to fix it, as I've never done a Lava Base, but I think the white needs to be a little brighter, so maybe if you could add a yellow wash or bring up some white highlights in the center it would help create a "glowing" effect.

The effect looks fine but the composition bugs me.
He kinda looks like he's standing on a hex map or waterskiing on molten lilypads that couldn't take its weight..
The pads that it's on are too similar in shape and the lava's width is too consistent.
I'd try to break up by making some of the channels wider or thinner and extending at least one of the pads to the edge of the base.

I agree with Alex; the layout is almost perfectly rotationally symmetric down the middle. That rarely occurs in nature, so, if you want a more realistic look, you should vary one side some more.

I agree, but I would be careful varying the pads. They should be reasonably big to support the weight of a Dreadknight. Too small pads will also look off.

Agreed.. Definately too uniform For my liking. The effect is well done but needs to be more random to look natural. Try making more streaks in the lava aswell as breaking up the plates
