So, I'm a cynical man. I doubt anything can ever impress me fully. But I recently played Valiant Hearts, as a recommendation. It struck several chords within me and brought me to the verge of tears many times. It's an example of storytelling at its finest, so far.

And it made me think, what games can other people recommend for me? Excluding the genres of RTS, jRPG, and anything on Xbox(I don't own one). I'm looking for new things to play, and could be interested in what you have to say.

What are you looking for exactly? Like emotion games, games with a message, different games, functionally brilliant games?

Give me a list of 5 games that you have played in the last few years that you liked. Its hard to recommend games to someone without knowing the preferences.

What system are you using? PC? Wii, PS3, PS4?

I have played a lot of games on the PS3, so I can give you some suggestions there. Some of my favorites were:

Mass Effect Trilogy
Dead Space Trilogy
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Fallout 3 New Vegas
The Last of Us
Little Big Planet
Uncharted Trilogy
Demon's Souls
Dark Souls I & II
The Orange Box

There is not this idea.

You should play Ernie's Big Splash. It has loss, puzzle solving, and emotion. And a rubber ducky.

Games I liked? As in, truly enjoyed? Nothing. Skyrim is probably closest I've had to a fun game.

I'm on PC, PS3 and PS4.

Do you like the works of RA Salvatore (Drizzt) or Todd McFarlane (Spawn)? If so, try Kingdoms of Amular. How about fighting games with an actual story: go Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice, and Mortal Kombat X (after 9). The storyline is pretty good, and there is some serious loss in it. Don't "fall in love" with any character: it's pretty common that people won't make it.

Not sure why double post...I'm sure it'll correct soon.

If you liked Skyrim, try Oblivion. It's similar in most aspects, and better in some (fancy making your own spells? Easy to break, but damn fun!) and onlyreally losing to Skyrim in the graphics department. Get it on PC for mod-ability and you should get a lot out of it.

In the pure fun category, try Assassain's Creed: Black Flag. Forget the quests/story, and just go a-pirating in an open, huge and graphically beautiful world. Mechanically andgraphically, it's oneof my all-time favourite games.

If the PS3/4 can play PS2 games, I always suggest hunting down Star Wars Battlefront (1 and 2). Even without online play, they are just about the most fun you can have with a console! Endlessly replayable, never gets boring, and still holds up 10 years later as one of the best games ever made!

Some of the ones I know have already been listed so here are some other titles I think are great:

For PS3/PS4:

Bloodborne.

Dying Light, the dropkicks in the game make up for so much, especially with friends.

Infamous Series by Sucker Punch

Helldivers, Towerfall Ascension, and Spelunky for PS4 are all insanely fun with friends.

For the PC:

Hearthstone

Tales from the Borderlands

I find it hard to enjoy 99% of games. Even the games I play most of the time I actually barely enjoy them. More of a meh. Unfortunately, my current friends play a lot of video games, so until I find more im stuck like this.

So games that have kept me interested is:

DayZ = being a multiplayer game that relies on human interaction, its the most adrenaline inducing game I have ever come across. It can also appeal to people in many ways. My buddy loves being a wasteland medic, I either go priest or cannibal or hippie. The gunfights, graphics and potential are simply stunning. Its also amazing for making your own story.

War Thunder = Personally I play on realistic as the gameplay is slower and less flashy, but it also significantly better community wise. Its not great fun, but I find it better than most of the crap I have on steam.

Besiege = Honestly, its cheap and creative. No bad story to ruin it, no annoying online players and the possibilities are almost endless. Some things people create (and even things you invent) will blow your mind.

Mount and Blade Warband = Endless possibilities with the mod, make your own story, multiplayer can be fun depending on the community and more importantly... endless mods.

I know you said no RPGs but Divinity original sin was a fun RPG game. Was very hard (without getting heaps of magic) and challenging. A lot of possibilities in that game and a fair bit of thinking when it came to facing real enemies.

Other than that most games bore me from the get go. I find I need games to make me feel like im in danger. I play most games and feel like a god who does set things to make cut scenes happen. I play DayZ and there is a very real fear anytime I hear footsteps or come under fire. Or on warband when a lord and his 2,000 men trap me and my 400 buddies with nowhere to run. Even on warthunder, when my tank decides to open fire revealing my position, only for the enemy team to start homing in rounds towards me. Games with consequences, to me, make the most compelling story. You die? thats the end. Story over. Or in warbands case, you get captured, you are set back hugely.

Also I find games that dont hold your hand a lot more fun. If you like a challenge, then definitely go for Dayz. As soon as you feel safe or comfortable, hell seems to break lose.

Depends what you are after though.

The Walking Dead is a great exploration series, and Season 1 is among one of the best PS3 games ever released.

To echo that sentiment, The Last of Us. One of the few truly perfect games I've played, akin to Halo and Super Mario Brothers 3 in terms of greatness. It's got action, story, and feeling out the wazoo.

If you enjoyed Skyrim, then Fallout 3 and New Vegas have the same open-world feel to them, unsurprisingly.
I was never a gun-bunny, and still dislike FPS, so I steered clear. But a friend convinced me to look, and I found it much deeper than that. The story and almost infinite scope for discovery in both games was addictive. F3 is a little more linear.

Bonus shout-out to Red Dead Redemption for being indescribably good, charming, touching and frustrating in equal measure.

Sounds like video games are not your thing then. If you cant say you enjoyed anything then I would find something else to occupy your time. Try building furniture, fishing, or playing golf. When I used to swim and weightlift I would go months without even touching my Playstation. Keep your PS4 though. It is a wonderful media center for none gaming entertainment. Note this is supposed to actual advice. I can understand if you haven't liked any games lately. I am getting the same way. I enjoyed games more years ago. I do not like what has happened to the gaming industry in the last few years.

If you want something to really draw you in, I'd recommend the Metro series (specifically the "redux" versions, cheap on steam IIRC). The story is very interesting (being adapted from a book, with direction from the author) and the level of world detail is incredible. Not an easy game at base either, and you have the option to make it incredibly hard with the "ranger" mode.

No. You misunderstand. I'm quite content being cynical, and miserable. I approve of nothing. I just want something that can occupy my time well.

If episodic narrative games (e.g. Telltale Games) are your thing, have a look at Life is Strange. I'm loving it so far. Well, besides the 6 week intervals between episodes.
