Subject: what Tyranid Carnifex builds do you bring to the fight?

I’ve recently put together a carnifex brood. I love the brain leaches but I wanted to have that first turn shot and the pinning of the stranglers so I gave all three of them one of each. I figure bring them in a bio blast formation ive got pinning and Dakka plus they can overwatch if they don’t get the charge and reroll those 1s and twinlink. I’ve put em together I just haven’t had a game with them yet.
Any thoughts, how do you all outfit your fexes?

Double brainleech on all of them. It's just a better all-round weapon. Against high T single models you're score more hits (and thus more wounds). The same goes for light-armoured vehicles.
Against hordes a stranglethorn could be better but it could also end up scattering way of the target because of the low BS Carnifexes have, whereas TL devs should net you 4-5 hits on average for each one.
And it's not like you only have to look at those weapons, you have to look at what the rest of your army brings to the table aswell.
Since Tyrannocytes (the drop pods) released, the TL devourer has become even better on MC's because any template weapon became heavily outclassed by a Tyrannofex with Acid spray in a pod. Pods themselves also have 5 barbed stranglers which provide a massive amount of pinning. You can't choose what they shoot but you sure as hell can choose where they land.

I generally run two different builds, depending on the game.
Build 1: Dakkafex (two twinlinked devouerers). Probably dropped in a tyrannocyte with barbed stranglers. This hits like a truck.
Build 2: “The Classic” Screamer-Killer (twos sets of scything talons and bio-plasma). I mostly keep using these due to nostalgia for second edition. But hey, there is a formation in apocalypse that gives them a hellfire template of bio-plasma!

Well, magnets rule! Yeah, I have liked "Gunfexes" (Heavy Cannon, Brain Leeches) for a long time...but currently I find two sets of Leeches to be the best loadout...I like the range of a Heavy, but my "style" is too active for having a part of it standing and shooting.
I still like Screamer Killers, though they are not as good as they used to be. I would like it if the next Codex adds some new options for Carnifexen (I really want a upgrade that gives Shrouding , or the ability to take a Thorax hive ) or say Lash whips, that would Rawk! And make CC a little more possible.

The traditional builds go for one strategy or another (melee or shooting).
It usually ends up being better for units to be specialists than generalists. You want you army to be a generalist (able to handle just about any task), but your units to be specialists (best at one task). This allows you to counter your opponent's units.
They have an awesome melee unit? Shoot it to death with a shooty unit. They have an awesome shooty unit? Kill it in hand-to-hand. etc.
But for less competitive games, mixed units can be a lot of fun. The third edition carnifex was designed to be the tyranid "dreadnaught". Strong melee, plus big shooty weapon (stranglethorn or heavy venom). Honestly, I think those look the best, even if they aren't the most effective.
Cheers,

Ya i miss those old days when the fex was just a bad ass killing machine. 40k seems to have just blown up in the MC game and our beloved carnifexes seems to have been left in the dust and become just become another midsized unit that you need to use in numbers.

Ha! true.
[hipster 40k] I remember when seeing 4 wounds on a toughness 6 body with a 3+ save was a terrifying site. [/hipster 40k]

I have to consciously remind myself that it's not scary anymore. I look at my two Tyrants and trio of Carnifex and I still catch myself wondering why I would ever need them all. I'm not as bad when it comes to other armies I learned when I returned during 7th but I still get a little frightened when I see Land Raiders too.
I keep a pair of Dakkafex and a single Melee with Claws, Bioplasma and Regenerate for all the good it doesn't do me. Still haven't picked up the Tyrannocyte I've been meaning to get so the Melee just sits on the shelf.

I think there's basically two choices: double twin Brainleechers and quad ScyTals with Adrenal Glands. Both builds are reasonably cheap and very good at their jobs.
