Hi guys.
I am dipping my toes back into the waters of 40k after a few years away. My last game was sometime during mid 5th ed and I played guard and Space Wolves.
I got rid of most of my 40k armies but have recently been given some additional 2nd ed marines and IG to go with the few bits and pieces I kept hold of. What I am looking for is help choosing a new army/dex and suggestions on what to build.
There are some specific limits I'm going to throw out here.
I'm going to list the troops I have available - This will be the only infantry foot slogging elite I will be getting - I have enough bits to provide nearly every flavour of weaponry though.
No post 5th ed vehicles. Unless they add flavor or something extremely necessary to the army. No Bike Spam either.
Semi Competitive at up to 1850pts - most games I play will be between 750 and 1500pts.
Most of my models are metal. where weapons are part of the figure I will list them. For this project I'm not going to convert and would rather play with what some off these guys already have.
So then - Heres what I got:
Marines:
25ish tactical bodies
2x Flamer bodies
2x sarg with Power Fists.
5 Assault marines w/jumpacks
1 Sarg with Power Fist.
(Al the plastic weapon options in the world for all these guys+ some FW grav guns I brought on a whim a while back).
8 Dev bodies 2x ML 1x Plasma 1x LC 1x HB (+Enough parts for 2x each Heavy weapon Extra).
15 Termies -Mainly PF/SB. Plenty of bits for other loadouts.
Apothecary
Chaplain
2x PA libbys
TDA Libby
TDA Captain
Basically what is the best dex and what sort of builds can i get with the only outlay on some extra vehicles.

So thats all you have and dont really intend on getting more things right?
Fun
Raven guard sounds fun with the scout move.
Take two 10man units with flamer and heavy bolters and combat squad them with power fist sarge. give em teleport homers and TP some Termies mid field by T2.
Utilize terrain for that sweet bonus stealth.
Best HQ will probably be the Librarian 1 in TDA for the terminators and another in power armor. those two at lv 2 will give you some decent places to roll to sure up any weaknesses you may face.

Cool, thanks for that.
I am considering vehicles, I'm not going to go out of my way to get even moar(TM) 40k stuff to clutter up the space I have already de-GW'd, but something like a Land Raider or pods are something I am strongly leaning towards.
Raven Guard CT's in the Marine Codex right?

Raven Guard CT's in the Marine Codex right? Yes Raven guard is the rum raisin of the vanilla marine ice cream party. Raven guard CT gives you Scout and first turn stealth for non bulky + models in the army. and gives some bonuses to jump packs. If you are going land raider though. you could do two crusader squads in LRC and use all those power fist models as various brothers though its a bit more one trick pony compared to the raven list.

Solution: go on ebay and purchase el cheapo old edition transports that take up way less space?
I got three like...3rd ed rhinos for the cost of 1 new big rhino on ebay and they take up like half as much shelf space. Also, less painting time, yay!
Personally I think rhinos are pretty much the most fun way to play basic TAC marines. Footslogging is sooooo slow and really annoyingly fragile and pods are dull because it's just "WHOOMP there it is if you're all dead now I win if not you win also I paid 35 bucks for each of these models that doesn't do anything"
|
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

You could be right. I used pods lots in previous editions but the old Rhino would probably complement my metal minis better. And who doesn't enjoy rushing their minis up field.

Rhinos are shiny, and Land Raiders are pretty meh. Troops in Rhinos with Scout get to move up the board even faster, since your Scouting transport moves 12" instead of the infantry's 6".
You need to be maximising your special weapons, ideally, since bolters don't do much against most targets these days.
