So I was looking up builds for my Chaos Lord and I came across a combo I thought sounded fun to play, my confusion however is that I'm not sure how the combo would play out rules-wise, here's my process:

Chaos Lord, Axe of Khorne, Combat Familiar, The Skull-Helm of Khorne

Ok so Axe of Khorne is S-User AP 2, combat familiar grants my Lord 2 extra cc attacks at S-4 AP-Nothing, Skull-Helm allows me to make one extra cc attack for every 6 my Lord rolls to hit in cc. The crux of the question now is can the two combat familiar attacks A) Grant me bonus cc attacks aswell and B) Can these attacks be made at AP-2?

Here's the wording that leads me to believe it may function as described, Skull-Helm states: "Every time the bearer of the Skull Helm rolls a 6 to hit in close combat he can immediately make another attack at the same initiative step. However, these bonus attacks cannot confer additional attacks."
Combat familiar states: "A model with a combat familiar makes two additional Strength 4 AP- melee attacks."

So the important things to me here is that The Skull-Helm does not specify what stat line these bonus attacks have, only that the bearer must roll the 6's to gain them, also the attacks must happen at the same initiative as the original attack. The kicker with the combat familiar is that it states "A model... makes two additional attacks" That means these two attacks are coming from my Lord and not in fact the familiar. Nothing in the Skull-Helm description states that the extra attacks must use the same stat line as the initial attack that provoked them. My reasoning then would be that I may use the AP-2 axe for my extra attacks and am not forced to use the lesser stats of the combat familiar attacks if it is the combat familiar that rolls the 6 to hit.

So is my reasoning sound guys? I don't want to seem like TFG, I don't think this combo is particularly scary, I'm sure there are better ways to build a Chaos Lord but this seemed like fun. Let me know if you can poke holes in this process guys and I may have to re-evaluate my build. Thanks in advance!

As long as everything you quoted was all the relevant rules and that you haven't missed any other lines that could affect it, I don't see why it wouldn't work. My only question is if it says what initiative step the familiar attacks. I assume it hits the same time the axe does?

RAI may be that the additional Combat Familiar attacks do not benefit from the Skull-Helm of Khorne or that if they do they should retain the S4 AP- but RAW your interpretation seems pretty clear from the rules you've provided so I agree.

They probably didn't give much thought to the interaction with the combat familiar but RAW your idea looks good to me. Sounds fun too!

That could yield some nasty results

If Im not mistaken, the chaos lord has 4 attacks?
+2 for rage charge
+1 for 2 weapons
*+2 different attacks for familiar

9 strength 5, in 5 attacks that could potentially yield around 2-3 more attacks? Seems delicious

I'd like to try that with chaos termy lord with 2 lightning claws
throw in a skull throne nearby and you could be rerolling hits and wounds
MEQ eat your heart out lol

Well said Sir

max 10 attacks with a chaos lord and without a daemon weapon? Now if only we had a cool rule like the old wolf-tooth necklace and we'd be set!

wait... dont daemon prines have 5 attacks? because you could easily do the same thing with him I think

The combat familiar doesn't have a specific initiative it goes on, it just adds to your existing attacks so it gels nicely with the skull-helm in that regards. If it went at I1 or I10 (like mandiblasters) then I don't think it'd work with the skull-helm as I'd like it to.

Yeah they are 3 attacks base and 2 on the charge thanks to mark of khorne, can sneak out 1 extra for a blood tithe point and since he's part of the slaughtercult also snag the free furious charge. Sadly the axe of khorne is a specialist weapon so it doesn't benefit from the 2 ccw rule. But toss the lord on a juggernaught and you get the +1 attack aswell right? Either way I'm absolutely stoked to try this out, I don't think it'll be amazing but I think it should be killy enough for my tastes and it's not very expensive to run either.

Thanks for commenting guys, I really appreciate the affirmation that I didn't bugger up my interpretation on this. I ran it by my local group too just to get their feel for it and they all seemed pretty stoked about the combo aswell, no one raised any issues with it so I say at the very least with my group I got the go-ahead. Thanks again guys!

Sadly the skull-helm has a footnote on it stating it may only be used by a Chaos Lord. I think GW was trying to avoid allowing people to spam ap2 melee attacks for some reason...

I may be miss reading here, or off topic.... But the wording for selecting the relics in the Daemonkin book. The page that has all the points before the data sheets says a model may replace a close combat weapon with one of the three and then it says OR may take an item of the next three. My wording isn't exact as I won't have my book til I get home in the morning (I'm working as nights) but I'd argue you can't take a relic weapon and a piece of relic wargear.

You sought to cower behind your walls, weakling? Instead, by the will of Khorne, you shall die behind them

You are correct, you can't take two artifact or relic items but the axe of khorne is a melee weapon (found under the melee weapons table not the artifact table), the combat familiar is a gift of khorne. This means that the skull-helm is indeed the only relic in my build.

OK, I misread and for some reason thought it was the axe of ruin and not simply an axe if khorne. My apologies.
