There are two different types of insurance and one is replacement cost, the other is actual Cash value. Dont buy an actual cash value policy. Ever. Just my advice. the savings wont be worth it.

Also, you have two options on a Replacement cost policy: take the money and run in which case you only get what street value is...or you can ACTUALLY replace them in which case you get full value.

Kind of a lengthy subject for this forum but there's the basics. Look carefully at any policy and make sure you are certain of its provisions.

Ahh, good to know.

I don't do our insurance though. I still live with my parents and they handle the home insurance stuff, since they own the home.

You can pay a small fee for riders to your policy that cover collections. The biggest issue will be covering anything beyond replacement cost. Your average insurance company will only cover the retail cost of miniatures. They will not take into account the time spent on painted miniatures, an estimate on the painted value of said miniatures, or if it contains OOP miniatures. So, if you have a beautifully painted army that bursts into flames or floats out to sea, getting a check to buy some new minis may fall very short of replacing what you've lost.

Solution - Send a friend X amount of dollars via PayPal with a note saying "For commission painting". Have your friend send you the money right back and just eat the 3%. Hang onto to printout of receipt. Then when something happens, show that receipt to the insurance company and you will be reimbursed for whatever you "paid" to have your army painted.

I believe they call that insurance fraud.

Strangly the little guys could swim about very well depending on the design of the tank. I only tested a few russes (who are drying out now) but I think the troops will sink (no air for buoyancy) but larger tanks like baneblades will paddle around just fine.

So perhaps the escape by water plan isn't too bad.

Hahaha! So funny! Nice test.

Good luck proving that Joe Smith didn't actually paint the minis. When my apartment was burglarized they didn't even ask for any sort of proof that I had owned the items I claimed were stolen. I told the police what was stolen, the value of each item and sent the police report to the insurance company. The insurance company took a few hundred off for devaluation of a couple items, wrote me a check and said they would also give me the money back from devaluation if I went out and replaced the items and sent them a receipt. I did things by the book but after being given $130 for $2,000 in tickets to a football game I wouldn't feel too bad about fudging the numbers to make sure I can actually get back the money I have in something. Another idea would be when you file a police report just add the cost of getting the minis painted into the value of your loss. There's a difference between burning your house down to collect the insurance money and making sure the insurance payout actually covers your losses.

I already own my house and of course it is insured, when trying to find out how much i wanted to get back for family and personal belongings I made a list in desending importance. Models were on the list, low on the list but on the list. Should anything happen I could easily get 3-4 1850 armies commisioned. I stated double for eveything.

Some insurances have a seperate section for collectors items...things that become more valuable over time. Guns come to mind...that type of insurance is a bit hefty in price for models IMHO but worth it for many other items.

you can get your own RENTERS policy or specialty policy for your own stuiff though which can go with a MUCH reduced deductible, which is what you want when talking about armies.

If you have a fully built and painted army, I don't see how getting money from your insurance company to replace a fully built and painted army is "fraud".

I think the problem he has with it is that it is indeed fraud, for he is evaluating his own work and most likely overvaluing it in order to con money out of the company. A perfectly legal alternative word be to take it to a professional evaluator to determine what the paint job was worth, that being said I've never done this so I have no clue if it would be valued as highly as you think it should be

I would just get a few quotes from reputable commission services and use an average of those. I'm not sure I know of an appraiser that's well versed enough in something as niche as whether that miniature is painted to tabletop or above tabletop standard. I know my stuff won't win any golden demons but it's also far better than any level 1 paint jobs I've seen from commission studios.

That probably would be the way to go, the only concern I would have is if the insurance company thought they were reputable. just need to check what their requirements are though.

That isnt what he said, now is it? What he said is he'd fudge in one area to make the policy do what you didnt pay for it to do. Fraud.
