I got the Chaos half of Dark Vengeance from a friend over the weekend and I'm wondering if there's any specific direction it pushes towards? I know they're the Crimson Slaughter but I don't really care about Khorne. Is there another good way to build upon them without going Crimson Slaughter?

Who says they have to be Crimson Slaughter? Kranon is pretty much useless but can make for a decent Sorcerer model, Vrosh is a good really low point game HQ. The Chosen make great Aspiring Champions in other squads of CSM and the Helbrute can be a Ferrum Infernus Dreadnaught. Slot some Autocannon barrels onto the Multimelta and there ya go.

Because of how few models there are, it's better to think of em as special characters than what they really are. But, it's the base of my own fledgling Chaos force as I build the Red Corsairs.

There is also the Purge Detachment in IA Vraks using an HQ and two Elites (Chosen and Helbrute/Ferrum Dread). Doesn't quite help the current models but can give you a new direction to take it in a Nurgle only build. Grab a Renegade Command Squad, use the Cultists as Renegades, it pulls from two Factions so it's an interesting idea.

Well, I'd tried to sell it at ebay but nobody took it.

All the 'buy now' options are ~$40. If you want to be sure it's gone, it would pretty much have to be ~$30. I don't think many people will pick it up anymore if it's more than that. And that price includes shipping. Over saturation and all that. Easier just to practice painting Chaos with them if you don't want them.

Ah fair enough. Well there is some pretty cool Nurgle "Conversions" of them, just add some greenstuff to pus them up!

You could expand them to form a murderpack formation that's quite good in >=1500 pt games with psy support. You need 5 brutes though.

The North

I used the cultists (Spire Guard) as part of my Thousand Sons army - I now have 60 of them as a meatshield. Cultists in large blobs make a good distraction unit and can bog the enemy down in CC - death by a thousand papercuts

The cultsits can be used as part of a Helcult (Helbrute Dataslate) if you wish, which is a nice addition to the army

The chosen - I've divided these up. They are used as aspiring champions or as normal chosen. The leader with the maul is acting as my Dark Apostle as I prefer the figure.

Krannon is a generic HQ / Sorcerer, though I haven't used him yet as I have plenty of other models for the role.

Admittedly while the Helcult is a use for the Helbrute - I just don't like the models aesthetics in my Thousand Sons, so he will likely find a home in the Deathguard army

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)

All good advice here...there is no reason you should feel these models must be used for a Crimson Slaughter detachment. I use the Chosen as Aspiring Champions, the one with the Power Maul as a Dark Apostle, and Krannon as a Sorcerer.

A friend of mine converted his DV Helbrute into a Daemon Prince, and its pretty cool (I just kept mine as is, and sometimes pull it out to run th HelCult formation)

Cultists are always useful no matter what type of CSM army you are running. And, on the off chance you play or are interested in Necromunda, which we still play on occasion, they make good models to play that game.

Truth be told the units are rather bad. Footslogging characters, melee chosen with weapons no one sane would take and a chaos dreadnought. At least the cultists are used as zombis or themselfs. But the rest is realy bad.

Starter sets are rarely optimal. But I think theres some good advice above for expanding into a decent Chaos force.

Mine are going to form the core of my Khorne Daemonkin army. It won't be super-competitive or anything, but at least the models will get some use. Like others have said, I will use the chosen as aspiring champions since they have the right look compared to normal CSM. Of course, I still haven't painted them, but its on my to-do list (I have a LONG backlog of models to paint!).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 40 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings

I'm thinking Thousand Sons at the moment. Lots of Psykers sounds fun especially with the rumors of the tzeenetch daemonkin book coming out soon.
