Is it just me, or are there a strikingly low amount of straight up support units (please read the entire post first before commenting.), now hear me out, ill only talk about the armies im kinda familiar with.

I am speaking of HQs that are really very much like the tau ethereal

Giving a bubble of a certain special ability or giving certain units mulitple awesome special rules

Examples-

Tau Ethereal (as mentioned before

Sanguinary preist

Painboy

Chaplain

Haemonculus

And although there are other options, why not add a few more, my main problem with these HQs is that (because I play DE and previously vanilla marines) they are not as good as they should be.

Its simple, I will exclude the Ethereal from the issues because he is perfect (as in exactly what im looking for) (I speak mainly of the Haemonculus and the chaplain because I am familiar with them) The issue with these characters is because there is still a aspect of killing things, the characters base is still laid out in close combat with extra benefits on the side (or at least thats what it feels like) why not make more characters like the ethereal.

I am not saying that very very large amounts of combat characters are necessarily a bad thing, but it gets boring to have to use your HQ over and over again with termis in LR or Incubi in a venom.

So dakka, what do you think? Thats just my 2cents, but it might be because of my play style or my love of different ways to play the game, just don't leave a mean or hateful comment.

You don't consider psyker HQs or equivalent (like a CCS issuing orders) as support HQs?

your right, sorry.

I know like nothing about AM, so I totally overlooked them.

and the only psykers that I played with were SM libbys and really the powers they have access to aren't as supporty as I would like.

They would be if you could choose the powers like before.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Other than that though there is a fair amount of support going around, just not quite in the vain of an ethereal or the fire cadre commander or whatever the extra shot guy is called, or even the suit commander with the appropriate gear.

Again, there would be if you could choose for example the command warlord traits. But yes, I agree there could be more force multipliers like that. Weak characters that are meant to provide support and support alone.

Chaos Marines really needs hq that are force multipliers instead of beat sticks.

If they remove cult marines like the rumors are true, then I would make this suggestion.

Typhus gives all regular marines with Mark of Nurgle within 12" defense grenades and poisoning ccw and fnp.

Lucius gives all regular marines with Mark of Slaanesh within 12" fleet and all bolters ignore cover. In addition, marines with MoS may choose to purchase 1 blast master as a hvy weapon slot.

Ahriman gives all regular marines with Mark Tzeentch with in 12" stonger invul save, snp and ap3 bolters

Kharn gives all regular marines with Mark of Khorne with in 12" +1 ws/bs and ap4 ccw.

Since there are no more cult marines this will be a substitute to getting cult marines. This would mimic Abaddon and his pe:marines bubble.

Personally I would make a Possessed HQ that gives all marines within 12" have +1 str, rending ccw, fleet.

A Mutilator lord that grants all champions with power weapons the ability to morph their power sword into an axe or mual and vice versa any turn therby increasing the utility of a champion.

Like a lvl 3 sorcerer? They get to roll on some pretty great psychic disciplines.

Or a Warpsmith? -1 cover to something in the enemy's deployment can be brutal.

Or a Dark Apostle? Seeing as they don't have ATSKNF like loyalists do, I argue they are better than a Chaplain.

Or how about Fabius Bile, who hulks out a squad of Chaos Marines? Or Typhus who gives you tarpitting cheap units with objective secured?

They've got plenty of force multiplier HQs. How effective they are is up for debate, but they are there.

neither of those is cheap thoguh and they can all hold their own.
Which, in space marine army makes sense, but yea.
Some 60ish points support hqs in general would be nice.

They could replace warlord traits with that for all I care XD

But are they as point effective as buffmanders?

Well a dark apostle in a squad of zerkers is downright nasty for one. Chaos is fine with it's support characters.
