Hey guys,

I don't normally paint warhammer, I usually build scale models. But I had to have a change of pace and decided to paint these guys up for my army! I'm no good at faces, still learning, hell I'm still learning how to paint this small. You guys are wizards.

Comments welcome!

Those are exceptionally well blended and look great! Was this airbushing? I seriously wish I could blend space marine armor that well!

Looks great. My only minor criticism is that the muzzles of the wolves could use a little more shading to add definition, but that may simply be the light

They were indeed airbrushed. I didn't go for that "hard" zenithal highlight that's seen quite often, as when you paint hard colors like say the gold or bone It sometimes looks funky. I can't pull it off. Wolves were painted from white to dark earth red then washed down with Sepia. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it.

Thank you sir! The muzzles are indeed like that in real life too. The wash I used was Sepia which is quite subtle. I was a little scared to go too dark on them. Do you have a wash that you suggest to take them down a bit more? I'm very open to any ways to improve.

Some other comments on another site was that the shoulders are no good in matte black. I honestly tried yellows and whites and couldn't find the right blend for them - so I went black. The multi color shoulder pads I found made the model too "loud" so I decided with black. For my grey hunters (when I get them) i'll experiment a bit more.

It's very easy to go overboard with an airbrush. I was trained to paint aircraft and armor so doing the very crazy highlights isn't natural to me. That isn't saying that it doesn't look good on other peoples work! It's just easy to over-do

Also, if anyone has any idea where to get white decals, I could really use some for the black but I kind of like it plain.

Again thanks to all taking a look don't be afraid to leave your two cents!

LOVE EM! Especially the shoulder pads, although there not the most lore-freindly, they look real good. Do you mind if I ask witch black paint you used, I mainly use Citadels abbadon black, and its not as matt as I would like, and the black on the shoulder pads is perfect.

Thanks! I use Vallejo Poly Black Primer and clear coat it with Tamiya Flat Clear spray.

What type of airbrush are you using? I've never really done it before, but after seeing some pretty great looking models like yours, I think I might need to give it a go!

I use Iwata brushes. I use a HP-C+ for warhammer and tighter details and a HP-CR for large surface spraying. There are better ones you can get for miniatures than the ones I use. I use mine to usually paint stuff like this for competitions:

For Miniatures I would suggest the Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR2+. Comes with a .2mm and .4mm needle/nozzle combo which is exactly what you'd need for super fine detail on warhammer stuff. I can manipulate my brushes to get the effects I want but you'll notice some folks on here that can get super fine details on their models with an airbrush. For that kind of work you need a .2mm setup. The H&S will cost you a pretty penny but I strongly suggest getting a good airbrush right off the bat and save yourself the heartache of a lesser quality brush to start. I specifically suggest that airbrush as it's basically 2 brushes in one. One for detail and one for your large area tanks / airplanes.

A few things to consider: An airbrush won't make your minis look fantastic out of the box, you need to be able to brush paint equally as well - which I suffer at. I'm still learning fine detail brush work on miniature; stuff like edge highlighting and extreme highlighting which does not exist in real life and would definitely NOT be found on large scale military models; but, is a technique used on miniatures to make super small detail pop. All of the painters on this site can run circles around me when It comes to the hand brush for sure. I paint 1/32 scale aircraft, as they are very large with very large details. That jet above is almost 19" long, and offers A LOT of area to work with - large models offer challenges as well as the larger the detail the larger an area is to notice defects where as miniatures you can hide away mistakes if you're clever. The airbrush will just get you that smooth look without any brush strokes found in hand painted large surface, as well as weathering and post/pre shading, paint variations, fades - airbrushed only mini's look pretty phony as depth is not apparent when using the airbrush, this is something I struggle with.

EDIT: Make sure you're careful with the much loved OSL effects. Very easy to over do and it's over-done ALOT! I'm an offender of this when I first started trying to paint warhammer.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks a ton for that exceptionally thorough write up! Now I'm looking at all the models you listed.

What do you suggest for air compressors?

No problem! For compressors just get anything with a 1-2 gal tank and a regulator / moisture trap. I use a Paasche but you can get the Paasche clones for 60 bucks instead of 200!

These look great. The light/shade effects look wonderful and I think the faces look very nice despite your misgivings. The fading and bases are top notch. Excellent job all around.

I can't really find much that I can give constructive criticism about other than the blank shoulder pads and maybe the wolves' teeth are a little TOO white. Maybe a little more staining on the teeth would help break them up a little and show the detail better. But believe me, I'm stretching to criticize anything.

Thanks sir! I agree with the pads but they are what they are now on my grey hunters I'll come up with some color for them I promise . Working on murderfang currently.
