Was reading up on company champion from a command squad and saw that he gets a combat shield that grants him a 6+ invulnerable save. Does this count as a weapon or would it be Wargear?

It's an extra piece of wargear which does not replace any weapons. Consequently he retains the extra attack for having 2 CCWs.

combat shields are wargear so they don't give an extra attack but they don't prevent you from getting it if you already have a pistol/ccw like a storm shield does.

It counts as war gear because it says it attaches to their vambrace leaving their hand free to wield another weapon. Also it doesn't say they can never get the bonus for two weapon combat, so enjoy 2-3 attacks for a CCW and a pistol with your 6++!

Ok thanks.
So does a company champion REPLACE his bolt pistol/ccw when upgrades to a champion or does he get the power weapon + cc shield in addition?
Same question about the apothecary? Can I give them gear and THEN upgrade them to a champion or apothecary?

It's one of those things that literally everyone argues about. There have been countless threads about whether or not you can give an apothecary a power weapon/bolter instead of leaving him with just a chainsword, but none have come to a general consensus, and as far as I know no FAQ has answered this.

Well at least I wasn't the only one confused about it. So I guesss it just comes down to HIWPI huh?

The C:SM Company Champion must exchange his CCW for a power weapon (your choice of axe, lance, maul, or sword) and a combat shield. He retains his bolt pistol (or arguably whatever you previously swapped it for). If you do not have a CCW to exchange (because you already swapped it out for something else), then you cannot select the Champion upgrade.

The C:SM Apothecary need not exchange any wargear, he just gains a Narthecium. He keeps whatever else he had previously.

Oh, that's right, I was thinking DA codex, which does replace the pistol with the narthecium. Still, you do get some people that argue that becoming an apothecary happens prior to choosing wargear. Since IIRC it says "a veteran may take...." and not "an apothecary may take". Although I'm probably thinking the DA codex, so might be different for vanilla marines.
